TWO RECALLS for CRIT councilmen -8-05-2010 !

Colorado River Indian Tribes councilmen Dennis Welsh Jr. and Merving Scott Jr. are being recalled. Welsh is being recalled by Tina Evans and Scott is being recalled by Vinton Tahbo. Evans and Tahbo need to gather a minimum of 366 signatures.
Deadline for the signatures to be submitted on Welsh is Aug. 24; and deadline for signatures on Scott is Aug. 23.
This is the third time to recall Welsh, who also serves as tribal treasurer. Welsh was recalled Dec. 31, 2009; and re-elected March 5. He then was re-appointed as treasurer.
Tahbo made a second attempt to recall him in April. He had until June 15 to collect 366 signatures. A total of 449 signatures were turned in; 120 signatures were voided; making 329 signatures valid, falling short 37 signatures of the minimum requirement.
Signatures were voided because of illegible writing; a signature placed where a name should have been printed and vice versa; and wrong Social Security numbers.
Tina Evan took out the recall petition on Welsh. Evans made the grounds for the recall:
Dennis Welsh Jr. has proven to have no regard for our council and membership. He has swayed the same four council members to concur with his blatant disregard for our constitution. Mr. Welsh's appalling debts to the tribe and outside his businesses disqualifies him as a likely choice for our tribal treasurer, which poses a direct conflict. He is in tremendous debt but expects the members to believe he can handle our finances by supplying inaccurate financial reports. He habitually leaves convened council meetings, especially when elders speak and expects respect. Mr. Welsh attended a coalition meeting and talked negative about other council member's attendance and turned around and said the opposite in a council meeting contradicting himself. He disrespects our deceased and campaigns at our funerals. The last recall on Mr. Welsh; he sat there on his own behalf and condoned 120 elders and others member's signatures to be thrown out. One reason given was signatures were past the black line; despite our attorney's stating this was not valid reason to discount a signature. We are not cronies we are tribal members with our own minds and opinions. If Mr. Welsh had any decency left, he would step down!
Welsh responded with the following statement:
First and foremost, I would like to say that I am very thankful and honored to serve the tribal membership in my capacity as a councilman and the treasurer, despite, all the personal attacks against me as an individual. I am very proud to be a part of the many positive changes that have taken place over the last three and a half years, and I will continue to work hard to bring about even more changes to move the Tribes toward a brighter future. It saddens me that the people who continue to try to recall me continue to step lower and lower in their attempts to lie about my personal conduct as a leader. As I have said before; anyone who knows me as a person and a leader can tell you that I am a very respectful and unselfish person who always puts the good of the people before my own. I am once again asking the tribal membership to trust in me that I will continue to fight for equality and fairness for all tribal members. Thank you for your continued faith and support to bring about the long overdue changes in the CRIT government.
Tahbo issued the grounds for the recall on Scott:
#2 Aug 6, 2010
Merving Scott Jr. must be recalled from tribal council. Mr. Scott has shown his utmost disregard for the Tribal Constitution and the voice of tribal members. His disregard is so apparent that he refused and denied tribal members the right to have their voices heard. He supported the tribal council decision that did not recognize the will and rights of the members. He has violated his oath of office to support and defend the constitution and to defend and protect the rights of tribal members. He has done this to help and protect one person, Dennis Welsh Jr. He put Dennis Welsh Jr. above the people and above the law. He has disregarded the will of the people by his actions that say tribal member voices, votes and signatures don't matter and therefore don't count. Meaning "you (the tribal member) don't count!" He has abused his position to influence and corrupt the democratic process provided for by our Constitution. We must recall Mr. Scott because he is not a leader of the people, but a follower of a select few on tribal council. His actions for the past year clearly show his unfitness and failures as an elected leader.
Scott responded with the following statement:
You, the Tribal members, must decide if what one group of people are saying is true. I have upheld the Constitution in the validation process that this group disagrees with. I have and will support the enrollment department in the conduct of their duties to this Tribe. If you feel this group speaks for all of you then you must decide to support the issue or not. I will continue to uphold the position of trust that you the people elected me for
