Hi,
My family is considering a move to Park Ridge. I have a 7 year old who will be starting 2nd grade this coming fall and I'm trying to get feedback on the elementary schools. I have heard great things about Washington and Roosevelt but was wondering about carpenter and Eugene field. Any opinions?

Why don't you consider Elmhurst? The school's are great and I believe the house are less expensive.

My take on the schools is the kids are spoiled and there is to much money. Most kids are either drinking or doing drugs once they get into highschool. Unless you are a full time and very dedicated parent I would suggest looking elsewhere. My child just started college and thank god kept away from it but sadly many do not. There are parents here with alot of money that feel it is ok to provide there kids and there friends with drugs and alcohol.

The elementary school system is very good, not great. One of the things you should consider is the location of the home you purchase or rent, as that will dictate which schools, elementary and middle, your child will attend. Also whether or not the school has had sound-proofing and/or AC done. Carpenter is in rough shape and needs mechanical work. Field is said to be over crowded and also considered the "rich kids" school. Some of the parents and kids are pretty hard to take but overall it's a good school. There isn't a ton of differences from one school to the next in academics.

Thanks PRMom. Any thoughts on Washington and roosevelt? I am looking for the right elementary and prefer a nice community ( non snooty) with lots of parent involvement. Any opinions on the drug problem as noted by "live in PR" (also thanks for the input).

You're welcome.

Washington and Roosevelt are quite similar in terms of atmosphere.

Washington is a bit more parent involvement heavy. They have a yearly program called Play Makers which creates a cooperative school community atmosphere. It's a fundraiser. In terms of ISAT rankings, Washington is at the bottom of the district barrel, but still way beyond the State average, with a 94 percentile rank. But a very high student enrollment but a very very low % of low income students.

Carpenter is the top of the heap in terms of ISAT rankings with a 96 percentile of students meeting or exceeding standards, despite having a higher percentage of low income students. They have the smallest student body in the district. They're about 1/2 the size of Washington, so the student body and school community provide a bit of a more "intimate" interaction for parents and students, alike.

The locations of each school seem equally screwed by overhead jet noise, but Carpenter has not been soundproofed. Pretty much if you're South of Touhy Ave., with the new O'hare runway configuration, you are screwed by jet noise. Carpenter is in need of major overhauls of their mechanicals and AC to be installed. As I understand it, the disctrict is considering those expenditures in the very near future.

As for the drug issue. What people seem all too unaware of is, it's kids wih money that are the customers for the drug market, in general. So if you control your kids' access to both money and your "adult" cabinets in the house, you have a bit better chance of deterring the substance abuse; not that their dear friends won't also provide opportunities, but...

However, "live in PR" has stated what I think are untruths, or at best overstated the case of substance abuse.

MCYAF, which is the Maine Community Youth Assistance Foundation does student surveys annually. According to the reports, MOST kids DON'T do drugs and drink. MCYAF has what they call a Social Norms Marketing program to dispell the myths about what teens do vs. what they actually do.

Best of luck to you and your family.

I meant to add a comment to the above. Washington and Roosevelt are virtually indistinguishable academically, demographically, and in terms of student body and class sizes.

PRMom I am afraid you may be in the dark. Schools are great and the area is safe but many children do experiment. Ofcourse they do everywhere but it is overlooked by many parents in the area. So many parents are naive when it comes to there children. Hopefully you are not one of them. And sad to say that many unhappy PR stay at home moms are part of the alcohol problem. I can not tell you how many moms I speak with that feel it's ok to provide their children with alcohol if it's supervised. They are naive as to the fact that the kids DO also drink more behind there back. Be smart and not naive and you should be fine.
