This is such a tragedy, my heart goes out to the family. If one person reads this, maybe someone else can be helped. Born and raised in Phoenix, its still "home" even though I'm a 1000 miles away. I work w/a PD here in Florida and recently attended a conference that had info on this very issue. If a live downed power line falls on your vehicle, do not attempt to get out - unless the vehicle is on fire. Why? Because depending on the amps/voltage of the line, the ground surrounding the line could be electrical as well. There is something called "Step Position" - If you must exit the vehicle, jump as far away as you can landing on both feet so your body does not become a conductor for the electricity. Then, take baby steps, or shuffle w/both feet together to inch away from the area. According to our speaker, you are safer inside the vehicle - again, as long as its not on fire. For further safety information on downed power lines, please go to your local online electric company. I'm sure they will have a safety page. Regards~
