Bishop Kmiec really seemed nice, but listening to his interview...he didn't say much. It seems reasonable to assume that he relies on others to run things for him. I can understand why they are reluctant to let him speak. I believe Bishop Mansell to be a much better leader, yet I was disappointed he did not begin consolidating parishes. We need to move with the times, but we need to do it better. Too much delegation and church politics.

"It is a different world from the immigrant world of..50 years ago". What is that meant to mean? Have those immigrants all gone back to Europe?
This unfortunate bishop appears to have completely lost track of what the Church is about. The Church was never instituted to adapt to the world but rather the opposite. What happened to the great spirit of evangelization which built it up in the first place? Christ started with only 12 followers. How much money did they have? Come on, Bishop, have some courage! Do what your years of training prepared you for. Preach! Evangelize! Give us an inspiring message, not a negative one! We'll support you! Expand your Church! Go out there and instead of closing churches and pretending it's good for everyone - "journey in faith and grace" - what a nonsensical euphemism!- start preaching the Church's message! Do your job! Start working out why Catholics aren't going to church any more. Start working out why Catholics aren't having children any more, start working out why other faiths are getting converts - and do something about it. Get your priests in the pulpits to do something about it. And listen to parishioners who want to keep their churches. Don't just kick them in the teeth. Tell them, right, you can keep your church if you fund it and fill it.
Don't just throw up your hands in despair. Other religious faiths aren't doing that. Aren't you a just a little embarrassed that a Catholic church in Buffalo has been turned into an Islamic center? Stop thinking like a bureaucrat, stop listening to so-called advisors who may have their own agenda and start thinking like a man of God.
Here follows a purely hypothetical scenario... A Bishop reaches the Pearly Gates and St Peter asks him what he did for the Church.
"Well I closed some churches"
"What else?"
"Well I closed some schools".
"What else?"
"Well I merged some parishes"
..and
"I did get people praying"
"Well that's something. How so?"
"I did get them praying I'd move on..."

Agree 100%......church closings are nothing more than a business decision, no matter how they cloak it in flowery prose. Journey of Faith & Grace; give me a break. The unmitigated gall of some mackeral-snapper priest telling me or my wife that we're adulterers due to each having been divorced; all the while he's dreaming of getting into some altar boys pants. They are all hyprocrits and liars, the Catholic Church is the most evil instituiton ever to be created by mankind, and I pray there's a special place in hell for all its criminals and apologists.

lets not confine the sex perverts to just the catholic priests!! there are ministers and reverends and rabbis that succumb to the pleasures of the flesh via the church secretary, prostitutes (male and female) and church goers themselves. Catholics haven't cornered the market on this but they have contributed in this hypocrisy in a big way.

Dear " Onlooker"
Thank you for the post. you speak for every one that I know.
Remember : In the days when Jesus walked our earth, He did not preach in a cathedral, or amazing structure. He was out there with the people on a hill side. He Brought God to them. Where are the efforts to address the problems you spoke of ?
Recruit For Jesus !!! Praise Him. Thank Him !
Celebrate the Good News.
It is difficult to be uplifted in your faith, when we are being dismantled.

If you ask me, this story was one sided. I'm sorry but the Bishop has too much power and he is ruining the lives of many Catholics in the Western New York region. I am Catholic and totally disagree with him on the church closures and other issues. No wonder why the Catholic Church is going downhill and in a major decline. Many people are leaving this faith and going to others. I think he better start refocusing on the parishoners not the almighty buck. (He lives in a mansion, has everything taken care of for him, etc. Wish we all could live like that. ) Maybe it is time for him to go.

Anybody been to St. Stephen's or should I say St. Clare's?

Empty pews that don't make the news.

We still can't figure out how Pet's pulled off staying open?

Maybe they should send Rich Kellman to Pet's and St. Clare's so they can film the bells ringing as the people don't walk into church.

What a con game!

To Whom It May Concern:

As we are well aware Buffalo is an impoverished city. In poverty stricken areas of Buffalo it is common for residents to seek strength from their local church. It is also common practice for the church to ask members to "tive" their salary / income to support the church and its various community projects. As a lifelong member of True Bethel Baptist Church in Buffalo I did this until something recent occurred.

In the past year our leader Rev. Darius Pridgen has come in to quite a bit of wealth - or is it 10 % of our incomes multiplied by hundreds of members? Despite the fact that his "flock" is located mainly right here on the East side and there is a desperate need for residents he used our churches money to purchase a swanky $300,000 town home on the waterfront (in the churches name). If one of his members is in need of emergency counseling it is nearly impossible for them to get to his location because it is so far away and not served by public transportation.

Mr. Pridgen has also recently acquired (in the churches name) a new Hummer and Saab Convertible on top of a late model Ford Expedition. These vehicles are each valued at over $50 k a piece and the Expedition at $25k. Our church money is covering the costs of gas and insurance too.

When questioned by certain members of the church regarding his recent spending they were threatened and he began to push his weight around. He uses his awards by the Buffalo News in 2004 as “Outstanding Citizen” and tells those who question him that no one will believe he is doing wrong. We are helpless in our community , without a voice.

Rev. Pridgen purchases all of his fancy suits, multiple luxury autos etc. tax-free under our churches name. He continues to prey upon our poor and elderly members. His popularity with the mainstream local media makes our members helpless souls.

Please investigate and report on this matter . Our community can not afford to support Mr. Pridgens lavish tastes and lifestyle. The local mainstream media has selected Mr. Pridgen to be our “voice”, will someone please investigate and report the truth .

It doesn’t take a genius to see that a church located and receiving its funding directly from the residents of the East Side should not be removing hundreds of thousands of dollars and re-investing them in a completely different local to provide their leader housing – unless there is something fishy going on…

Rich Kellman should have prepared a cross-section of feedback from various, or at least a few parishes instead of just one, which ONLY shows a favorable light to the Bishop's closing & mergings. Few faithful feel this way; it was biased and one sided. the Bishop said nothing more than economics are priority over Evangelization. That's the problem. He denies being the hatchet man: that's true, since it is Regina Murphy and he was sent here merely to sign papers as a detached figurehead. His comment about the immigrants who built our churches was unfeeling; without them, who have indeed passed but left us churches to adore and worship God in, gave tirelessly and unselfishly so we could benefit spiritually from them today. Tradition is an anchor to the faith. If he keeps closings up, we will just re-build after he and Murphy have gone. I am sure he can do little further damage in retirement. Or her. I pray for them to melt their hearts and lead us rather than betray us for thirty pieces of silver. Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy. Save us.
