My family and I have lived in Paris a couple of years and finally know a couple of girls that we trust to babysit for us. The problem is that I have no idea how much to pay them. I have to sons. They are 6 and 8. I have asked one of the girls that expressed an interest in sitting how much she charges and she replied, "whatever".

How much do you pay?

If you want them to be available when you need them, at LEAST minimum wage. I never had problems getting a sitter.

You should stay home and take care of your own kids.

I agree with the person that said at least minimum wage, but I would also leave enough money for them to order a pizza.
That way she doesn't have to cook. I always worried about having to cook when I sat for kids as a teen. I was and still am a very good cook, but I was always worried that something would catch on fire. I was much more at ease when the parents left money for a pizza or left something that was easy to cook (like frozen pizzas).
Plus, it makes the night special for the kids and can become a treat to have someone come and sit with them while mom and dad are out taking care of their personal time.

I have done childcare since my teen years. I've charged a variety of prices over the years. Basically, I charge based on the children. If your kids are hellions, then I'm charging more for my effort in dealing with your uncivilized brats! I don't babysit more than once for them though because I don't agree with your parenting skills and I don't want to be around you. In the real world, minimum wage would be an awesome amount (or maybe a little more), but there's too many people these days that only make minimum wage so they can't afford to pay that obviously! I also believe that if you're working, you should have to pay less, but if you're just out for fun, then you should be paying for that also. These are my personal opinions and I have never had any trouble with not having kids to keep. I'm constantly turning them away for a lack of time to do it! I take pride in what I do and the kids I keep love me. I'm not a baby factory and I'm not a nanny. I'm there to love your children while you're away and show them that the whole world isn't bad! Too many people do it only for the money and I don't agree with that at all!

Wow times have sure changed...I can remember getting a 1.50/hr...guess I am showing my age... but, true in today's times it should be more and if you find a good one make it worth it for them so you can keep them. you want your children to enjoy them and feel safe ..so you can rest knowing they are being taken care of with love..let's face it you are entitled to a night out now and then.

How do you find a good babysitter? I need someone during the daytime for haircut and dentist appts, and maybe to run errands or clean closets (which is impossible with a toddler). I could put an ad in the paper but for such a few hours per week am not sure anyone would be interested. New here and don't know anybody!

I would definately put an ad in the paper. I know several people who do the same thing you do. However, there is a mother's day out program at one of the local churches. I'm sure someone else on here could help me out since I never used it, I forgot where they have it at. I think it's at Calvary Methodist on Lamar, but I could be wrong. I know several college students that do this kind of thing during the day to try and help with the tuition money their parents pay. A lot of other ones can't have a full time job because of school, but do odds and ends to have spending money for the weekends!

Ask Wendy Calabria - I think she pays about 25-50.00 an hour.

Hello,

I am an Australian girl, based in Paris and currently working as an Au Pair for a family (Monday - Friday, 4:30 - 7:30pm). I'm honest, reliable and love children! If you have any part-time babysitting you require, feel free to email me: mary_southmelb@hotmail.com

I'd be happy to meet with you first (perhaps at a cafe or somewhere else local to you) before I came around to mind your children!

Best,
Maryanne.

We pay ours around 8 to 10 dollars an hour. If we are gone longer or if the kids have not been put down yet we pay them more. And if the babysitter is one you really want to keep pay her well.

I agree with many comments on here. My daughter is certified through the red cross for baby sitting and she makes about $5 to $8/hr.
