I have a friend who said the new smart meter was installed today. I have heard nothing good about smart meters and don't want one. Why can't we opt out?

I came home yesterday to an Oncor flyer on my door and grey meter tags scattered in my yard. When i walked in the house everything was blinking like the electricity went out, i figured something was up.

Yeah! That was weird wasn't it? They kind of sprung that on us without warning.

They knocked on my door today and told me they were fixing to switch ours out and I ask him if we could opt out and he just smiled and said no way, it's the law that you let us switch it out....what a bummer.

Yep, along with GPS devices in car and on phones

"snapshot discounts" from insurance companies that monitor driving habits

satellite radio

cell phones - can be tracked and turned on and used as microphones whenever big brother wants

Grocery store "loyalty cards" that monitor buying/spending habits

Credit/debit cards, and other cashless forms of "currency" exchange

heck the list goes on, and now they add electricity usage to it!

hayseed aren't you the one who runs and buys a portable generator when the electricity goes out, and returns it when it comes on. Nikola Tesla thanks for inventing alternating current. Edison thanks for DC and stealing AC from Nikola who died poor. So you see the electric business has been a stealing one since day one.

Wow, after untold thousands of idiotic, stupid, senseless posts, cash finally has a valid point! Not very realistic or feasible, but valid nonetheless.

This smart meter tells you what is not energy efficient in your home and where your wasting valuable electricity your buying. Hayseed you'll just have to start pleasing your old lady and have her put the vibrator up and let it cool down. Seriously there is no law you have to buy electricity but there is a monopoly on where you buy it and what rate you pay and people living out of town pay a much higher rate. But then their is no law that you have to live out of town right. You could live in Mexico and your money would be worth 10 times what it is here, and you wouldn't have the choice as very little of the out skirts of Mexico even offer phone lines, electricity, or running water.

How my family uses our electricity is our business, not the electric company's or the government's. All they need to know is how much we use and that I pay for it. On time. Every month.

Saw the man walking to my meter and ran to see what was the deal. Got out there and he had already swapped out the meter.

Sure wish I would have got out there to read the meter before the switched it. We have had several months of a/c usage and over the last two months been weening off and this past month hardly none at all.

Why then is my electric bill $50 more than it should be? How do they know what the meter was before they switched it out. He had no documenting items on his person and only the meter. The new meter started at zero.

Normally I personally read about once a week but I had been slacked...and now I have to pay for it.

I wonder... One more screwing we can't get out of, huh?

This is why I want off grid.

If you haven't got your smart meter yet, they are coming... Better be reading that meter once a week so you can fight back when they bend you over.

I have been on a smart meter for over 10yr. There have been no problems with it. when the power goes out, they can look at the board and get a better idea where to go to do the repair. Grid power is the cheapest and most reliable. We all have 100% control over our bills.

Good points! Technology is a double edged sword and one must be careful with it.
