Where's the cheapest place in town to get a passport?

Could you also tell me how long it normally takes?

We don't need them until May, but I don't want to get into a time crunch later on.

I think they are pretty much the same price everywhere. I got mine at the post office and it took exactly 17 days to get it. It was taking longer when they first started requiring passports but not long anymore. The post office recommended applying 6-8 weeks in advance just to be on the safe side.

Don't quote me on this but I think mine was like $97.00, good for 10 years. My kids passports were around eighty something if I remember correctly. The kids passports are only good for 5 years. And both parents have to go to the passport place at the same time and sign. If unable to both to go together, the parent applying can bring a notarized letter from the missing parent giving permission for a passport.

It saves a little bit too by going to Walgreens to get the photos taken, then taking them to the postoffice. You'll need official birth certificates too. Gets kind of expensive by the time you get all of this done. Close to 100 dollars a person.

My Husband and I just got ours. We had our pictures taken at CVS, took them across to the post office with a copy of our birth certificates. For everything, pics, certificates, and passport, 45.00 each.

Passport fees are set by the US State Department. There is no "cheaper" place to get one. The only thing that varies is the cost you pay to get your passport photos done.

$45.00? According to the State Department, the only thing they charge $45.00 for is a Passport CARD which is not the same as the traditonal Passport BOOK.

If what your traveling for is non-international air (ie: land to Can. or Mex. or cruise ship) then the CARD is all you need. Otherwise you need the Passport BOOK. This costs $100 total.

If you submit your paperwork to the State Department by mail, they will not charge the $25.00 execution fee. That makes the BOOK $75 and the CARD $20.

You can go to Houston to get them, if you have the chance, pass on that. Better to play it safe and get it early.

Yes, the Houston Passport Agency is downtown in the Mickey Leland Federal Building (not to be confused with the Mickey Leland terminal at Bush Intercontinental). Can't just swing by, you have to make an appointment.

And I think it has to be within 2 weeks of departure, and it's not like a one on one appointment time either. It's like a whole bunch of people have the same appointment time.
