I went there in the summer after doing a lot of searching and talking to people. One was a Deputy that had grown up in the area and he knew a lot about it. Unfortunatly, the house burned down several years ago. All thats left are the chimneys of the house and an old shed. I was really sad to learn that it burned.

I may be thinking of a different place but there was a house down there just before you came to that real sharp curve that was hidden off the road that was supposed to be haunted....someone later told me on here that it had burned or was gone now..? Cant remember but it was a spoooooky place!!

What ever happened to the Cobb house off the loop? That place was also supposed to be haunted...

When I played ball at Wise Field there was also a house right behind it people would say was haunted...seems like it was a big red old house that someone refurbished...?

the slate shoals property is the old Womack farm, right across from Womack Lake. the old house burned to the ground a few years ago and many suspect that it was arson. the house across from it was also burned a few years ago lending to the suspicion that there is an arsonist in that area.
the Womacks were a farming family but, i don't believe that it was a "plantation".

I'm the owner of the house that burned across from the alleged "haunted" house. We were the caretakers of the large Womack house as well until my father died. I suppose I need to reestablish contact with the Womacks on that side of the family. The big house likely was arson, but our house burned January 3, 2004 from an undetermined cause. May have been old wiring, may have been arson. It certainly was a tragic loss for my family, since we have so many memories of the place.

By the way, I'm amazed that people continue to brazenly drive through our driveway gate at night WHILE WE ARE SITTING THERE to ask "if the place is haunted and do we mind if they look around?" My usual response is, "Do you always display such disregard for private property?" and "Yes, I do mind. Go away." I mean, the nerve! What if you were to bop into the driveway of some douchebag cooking up a crop of methamphetamine and got shot? A failure of imagination can be quite a liability.

Anyway, no. Neither of the houses were haunted. I had been in the big house at midnight, after midnight, during the day, and on Rosh Hashanah; and I've never seen a ghost there. Our house certainly wasn't haunted, unless my family and friends count as unfriendly poltergeists.

So, there's no ghost. The gates are there for a reason. If it's during the day and I'm there, feel free to stop and ask; and I'll let you in and show you around. Otherwise, show some respect and don't invite yourself in.

As I have come to know it, the white house on top of the hill on the North side of FM906 was originally the home of Sam Womack, the oldest son of Marshall Womack Sr. The old 2-story house on the South side of the road was originally the home of Marshall Womack Sr.(built by and belonged to) and his first wife "Letha". They raised Sam, Allen, Hal, Vivian in this home. Later, Marshall Sr. moved to the farmhouse at the bottom of the hill where he raised his second family with his wife "Lois". They had a son Marshall Jr. That house burned down in 1963 or so.(My husband is Marshall III.) Before they moved there, that was formerly the boarding house for the Slate Shoals Plantation and later converted to their private residence. Many older maps describe the property as the "Womack Plantation".
The last known resident (to us)of the house across the street was "Ross Alsup". It's not known to us if he was related to the Womack Family or the Allen (Letha's side) Family.
