Has anyone had trouble with their evinrude e-tec motor? We have a 2 yr. old boat that the powerhead has burnt up. The dealer/mechanic reported to Evinrude that it was due to owner neglect so, of course, that nullifies the extended warranty. Evinrude's DVD that comes with purchase says no manintenance for 3 yrs. Evinrude's response to us has been very unhelpful to say the least. They relunctantly have agreed to a "good faith" contract to where they have us paying $4000.00 of the $7000.00 to replace the powerhead on a boat with 21 hours of use on it. They repeatedly have said this is a one-time offer from them. So we are afraid to even take it out again. That's if we the dealer/mechanic will call Evinrude to give a verbal okay that we have already paid $854.00 before Evinrude will send the new powerhead out. The boat has been out of commission since June 2--we can't even use our $22,000.00 boat and summer is about to be over for us. We took it out 1 time this year when the trouble started. We have gotten nothing but the "run around" from the dealer/mechanic and Evinrude. This boat was $22,000.00 when we purchased it in '07. We have it almost 1/2 paid off. This was the first time we ever bought a brand new boat and this has turned out to be a NIGHTMARE!! We are simple working people and we don't just have $4000.00 sitting around. But we still have to make payments on a boat we can't use. We have also began to hear reports that Evinrude motors are breaking down due to "bad" gas and reports of the amount of Ethanol in the gas as the cause of the breakdown of their motors not owner neglect. Yes, we need a lawyer!!!

There is a recall out on evinrude e-tecs. We bought a new pontoon boat with evinrude e-tec in Feb. 09. Received the recall notice in the mail in June. We took it back to dealership and had the part replaced. No problems so far....

Hello....I've had the same problem. Mine is an ETEC 225 just three months out of warranty. Evinrude replaced the powerhead (over $8000) and I paid for the labor of about $1400. I had all sorts of problems with it last year but my mechanic told me his hands were tied because the motor was under warranty at the time and he could only do what Evinrude authorized him to do. He kept all the paperwork from last years repairs and after almost of month Evinrude agreed to replace the powerhead and fuel injectors.

I purchased an Evinrude 175 e-tec motor in June 2006; I since then have replaced 4 power heads and now needs number five. I just received a phone call October 1, 2009 from BRP telling me it is now my problem and for the warranty people to deal with. The first power head went in 10 hours, second in under 3 hours. I have a 175 e-tec and have went through 4 power heads in 3 years and under 30 hours of use, all this time I have been dealing with BRP and doing everything they ask, to be told today that it is my problem. From day one I have asked for a new motor saying this one is a lemon, but I was told by BRP that I would have to blow 3 power heads before they would replace the whole motor. We are going on to number 5 power head and BRP said my three year is up in June 2009. All long in the three years they were telling me do not worry if this power head goes, no question asked we would replace the whole motor. But today they tell me it is my problem. I had this motor for three years but only had it on the water for 1.25 year the rest of the time it has be in the shop or waiting to be repaired.
IF YOU ARE CONCEIDERING A NEW MOTOR
DO NOT PURCHASE A E-TEC MOTOR
BRP DOES NOT STAND BEHIND THERE MOTORS.

DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM BRP! I have an etec that blew up within the warranty period and they will not honor the warranty claiming that their dealer didn't file the correct paperwork. I am not sure how that is my fault. They don't even care why a 3 year old engine blew up.

I bought a jet boat in June of '09 with a 2005 Etec 90/65 factory jet outboard on it. It failed after one hour of use.(Number 2 cylinder blown) I contacted the previous owner for help and he told me the sordid history of this motor. My failure was the 3rd. His last failure (2nd)required him to sign a "one time goodwill offer" where Evinrude provides the powerhead and he pays the labor for repair. The 3rd failure happened 4 motor hours after the second failure. This motor has a total of 88 hours on it since it was uncrated brand new!!!

3 failures on a motor with less than 100 hours???

are you kidding me???

Letters to Evinrude about my problem generated corporate letters saying basically, "Sorry Bud, you're S*** outta luck...you're not the original owner...we'll be glad to offer your mechanic advice on how to proceed...do not contact us again"...

I feel sorry for anyone who would buy a motor from BRP. It is obvious that they are a disreputable company. The motor is only as good as the company, and in this case, USELESS!

let me tell you how I solved my problem...

I repowered with Yamaha, a bullet proof motor made by a quality company that cares. Hell, they even warranteed an oil pump on my other boat's motor that was 2 years out of warranty. I didn't even ask, they OFFERED!

I bought an Evinrude E-Tec 150 three years ago. I fish alot but used it very often to pull the kids skiing. No problems what so very. All so I have raced 3 other boaters with Yamaha 150's and have yet to be beaten. I'm very pleased and would recommend an E-Tec to anyone who asked!

I bought an evimrude e-tec in feb. 07. The #2 cylinder burned up in 08 in may. Evinrude replaced it no questions asked. The #2 cylinder burned up the following year(in may). They replaced it again, fully dressed powerhead, no questions asked. The lower unit seized up the following month. They replaced it no questions asked. This year i only made it til march, 1 month after the manufacturer warranty lapsed and evinrude refuses to do anything about it. the ext warranty people said it would cost 12,000 to fix it and it was only worth 7900. they told me they would give me 7900 and they were done and the rest of my 4 year warranty was void after they pay. This motor has a defect that evinrude refuses to acknowledge or fix. I am trying to save money to buy a yamaha, I have a friend that had a problem with his yamaha after 4 years and they fixed it 1 yr out of warranty. I would never buy or ride in a boat with an e-tec. I will go bankrupt trying to sue them before they go out of business.

My 2006 E-Tec with 111 hours on it just blew the number six cylinder. They tried to tell me I ran it with no oil and my warning lights should have gone off. That didn't happen. It is supposed to shut itself down if that would happen. six months out of warranty I am being asked to sign a "release" for repairs at the reduced price of $4,600 for parts plus labor. Release from what? After reading some of these comments I am concerned about spending the $$. It doesn't matter that I worked the Milwaukee and Chicago Sports shows for Evinrude. My last engine was a BRP Ficht taht blew up after 300 hours a few months out of warranty. Their answer was to sell me an E-Tec for $12,500, I paid for installation also.

I purchased a 2009 Ranger Reata 1850RS last year with a ETEC 150 and knock on wood it's been a great motor. One of the things that I've always done since the day I purchased it is use non-oxygenated premium gas. I think the ethanol is horrible for motors so I don't use it.
I would like to reprop the boat because I don't seem to be getting the performance I would like. I currently have a 4 blade cyclone 19pitch prop and the top speed I am getting is 46mph and my RPM's are only at around 5200. I did try the 17pitch and I did get a higher RPM of around 5500 but I didn't go any faster. Does anyone know if a three blade might be better in terms of top end speed?

I have a 2008 18 ft BeeLine with a 150 E-Tec my prop is three bladed Raker 14 1/2" 24 pitch. I'm not as quick out of the as I would like, but I can jump a skier up pretty easy. I did add a high performance Hydrofoil. I couldn't tell you for sure what the RPMs are but my speed tops out 69 mph with two men in the boat. Good luck!

I BROUGHT A 2005 E-TEC AND HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE MOTOR STALLING.
I THINK ITS A ON GOING OVER HEATING PROBLEM BECAUSE THE MOTOR WAS
SERVICE LESS THEN 10 HRS OF USE BEFORE THE PROBLEM RETURN.

I have an E-Tec 40 about 4 yrs. old, and out of warranty. There are 28 hours on the motor. The oil pump has gone bad, fortunately I caught it before any damage. It's costing me about $700. for repairs.I think this is unacceptable, I will never buy anything made by BRP, and will discourage anyone from buying their products.

Well I wish I was not adding to this post. But I am about at my wits end with my 150 h.o. E-tec. They were correct about more time on the water. I can't get back to the boat ramp. I have been to the shop after each use of this motor. 2 bad starters, one bad injector. Back to shop as I write this no power.BRP has replaced everything so far, but i have no faith in this motor. I have been DQ twice from tournaments because I can not make weigh in. Have to be towed in. Great product put it on your boat and your stuck with it. I also feel it is a lemon. It is one year old and has not run consistant from day one. I am making copies of service that has been done and money lost, back and forth to shop and tournament expenses. Attorney is going to be the winner.
