any one else notice they round up your bill? This is charging for services not rendered. It is fine if you signed up to have them round up but doing it when a customer doesn't know why or what for is not right and probably not legal. They say it is for a charity. They are not affiliated with any of the charities that assist in electrical bills, as far as I have been able to find out. Think they should publish in the paper how much they collected each month and to what charity it goes to, just to make sure it isn't going to pay board members electric bill. I choose my own charities that I support and the BPU does not qualify in my book.

I am totally in agreement with you it's bullshit and In some states it's illegal period to turn off electric. Far as I'm concerned electric Should never be turned off. But it don't matter they don't care I was short because u was short on hours at my job due to me being off work to take care if my sick child and wife I gave them what u could but it was "enough" it didn't matter they were still gonna turn it, apparently it was not an option to wait a week. And I had 3 month old at the time and it was in the middle of February. So yea let someone say that whole bs bout you should pay your bills I pay mine all the time but sometimes " shit happens" and in times of actual need there should be exceptions. So yea I am in 100% agreement with you

I would hope that BPU would work with critical situations, such as those who have young children and especially infants. It has been said that they are not very sympathetic when it comes to shutting the electric off for past due or late payment bills. The reason is most likely that they have been bilked by people who just move off and leave them owing an unpaid balance. However, they do a credit check everywhere now and when these people move to another location the bad credit will follow. This is not saying that anyone who gets behind is trying to escape their responsibility. For a fact, people do run into financial situations not of their doing. They could and should work with them on a payment plan. I do not know if they do or not. But it appears from the comments they do not.

It seems like when we run into tornado weather, such as we do and did this last Spring, folks with all electric homes outside the city are in for a few miserable days. No heat - no air. This happened to those of us outside the city when we were hit with tornado and high winds this last summer. I know many suffered worse than outages. Our electric was off four times and twice for 3-4 days in a row. By this time food is spoiled and everyone is on everyone else's nerves. It sure is an isolated feeling when only NOAH weather is the only source of information. Many years ago what we learned from some seasoned experienced Henry Co. folks is, when the weather is predicted to possibly shut down electric, fill your bathtub right off, then you will always have water to flush the toilets. If you have a laundry sink, fill it also, you will have water to wash with. But for the random shut-offs due to people who have come onto hard times, I would agree those with babies, children, sick or frail elderly and even people on oxygen... it is cruel to make them suffer for non payment beyond their control. For this I would be willing to donate some on my bill to help in these emergency situations.

I've been wanting to spout this off for some time. Thanks for the opportunity to put in my two cents worth.

I understand that they have to shut off service for nonpayment, but like the person before me said there are special circumstances. If I am remembering correctly when they started the round up billing they said that the money would go to help those people who could not pay their bills. I was all for it at the time, but when they decided they give it to their charities I disagree with that. I wonder if you can decline being a participant in the round up? I am not against giving to charities, but let me decide who I give my money too. Use it for what it was started for, the people who need help on their bills.

Salvation army and the place in the old school building or whatever it's on Jones bend road help people with electric bills and carey has a program that just did a benefit at the krider for help with homeless and electric. And yes you can request it be removed at time of payment. I did. Donation have to be volunteery, they just hope you do not notice. Otherwise they are breaking the law. They do not offer any assistance, but i agree a monthly accounting of to what they collected and where it was sent needs to be made public information just like the accounting of what each dept makes or loses is in paris pi this information should be included should ask pi why it isn't.

Isn't it amazing how people are just now noticing that BPU sucks? Don't fight them..they will ruin your life. Hide your names and never speak out or they will make you suffer. The people of Henry County will come out against you for saying anything against their rich friends. I left and I will never come back!

I totally agree. Don't let it be late and get it cut off. I got paid the day it was due and didn't get up there until 9:30 am. They turned it off around 9. Then, they made me pay a $40 reconnect fee. Then, about a week later in the mail I received a bill from them for $325. It's for your deposit. THEY ARE CHARGING YOU FOR A DEPOSIT WHEN YOUR ELECTRICITY GETS TURNED OFF! They are the worst crooks in Henry County. I wish that they had competition.

BPU cut mine off early one morning while I was at work. I got home with my young kids at about 9 after getting them from the sitters to find my inside dogs sick, my deep freezer of food nearly defrosted and it was in the middle of summer. I had placed the payment in the drop box the night before. When I called, they said there was nothing they could do until morning. All I got the next morning was an apology because they credited my funds to the wrong account. They basically said I was out of luck on the food, sick animals and the fact that I had to find somewhere to stay overnight.

Another time, I wrote a check on the wrong account. I dropped it off that morning, realized my mistake, withdrew the funds and picked up the check on my lunch break. They will no longer take a check from me saying I picked one up. Yes, but it didn't bounce. I wrote it on the wrong account. They didn't care.

They are, minus a couple of employees, very rude and I think it's wrong they have a monopoly in Henry County.

If you pay your bill... then adjust your bill paying so you can write check and mail it week before it's due.

I do and I have never had my utilities turned off.

Utilities come first!!!

"The Paris Board of Public Utilities was created in 1938 to serve electricity to all of Henry County and water for the city of Paris. Owned by the city, we are governed by a independent board appointed by the mayor and approved by the full commission."

Now I want you idiots to read that very carefully... OWNED BY THE CITY. They are not a monopoly like Ameren and can't make their own prices or their own rules.. you think the meter readers have any discretion at all? if you do you are retarded.. Ameren might can do that stuff but BPU doesn't make their rules.. thats the boards fault that's over them.

The problems with the BPU(and they are many) are seeded in the fact that they are a city owned municipality. I have called and ask the state this. Because they are city owned, there are absolutely no rules or regulations over them by the state...meaning they can do whatever they want to whoever they want, whenever they want. Most municipalities are either co-ops or publicly owned, in which case they are subject to state laws and regulations..i.e.. Paris Henry County Natural Gas. This is the reason the BPU can charge a ridiculous rate to pay with a credit card and give you such a short time to pay your bill after you have recieved it, charge such ridiculous deposit amounts, etc.. The only thing that can be done about it is to call or write your congressman requesting that they pass laws governing city owned municipalities. It is a problem that needs to be addressed.
