I would recommend changing the Water Pump at the same time, since the Water Pump is driven by the Timing belt. Labor would run about $192.00 to change the Wter Pump, Timing Belt, Tensioner and Pulley. Not sure about the cost of arts, but can check or you tomorrow if you want. I am a ASE Certified Mechanic and have been doing repairs for 20 Plus years.

Just to let you know, you cars engine is called an interference engine, meaning that if you are driving it and the timing belt breaks, it is highly likly the your engine will bend valves, due to pistons still moving up and down by the crankshaft, but the valves stopping in whatever position they are in since the camshaft stops when the belt brakes, and the pistons rotate up and hit the valves, bending or breaking them.

I have been a mechanic at Gateway here in Paraould for the last 4 years, and we do the type of repairs you need. There are a lot of good shops here in Paragould, but if you would like me to look at it and give you a better idea of the problem and possible repairs, my name is Robert, and I am at Gateway Monday thru Friday, and half a day on Saturday (236-308). You may want to talk to some parts people at the autoparts stores here in town and see if they have any recommendations as to who to take it to.

As the poster said, it is an interference engine, its possible valves are bent if the belt indeed broke, I had an Avenger, ended up being over 1800.00 after head work. Im not saying that is what is wrong with your car but it is a common problem with those engines. Had an old Escort, when it broke belts, you just put one on and roll with it, those were nice easy old engines.

Hey Robert, I have a 2001 Dodge Intrepid with the same problem. Do you have any idea on the costs to replace timing belt and water pump?

I have had great luck out of gateway in Paragould Robert is good and honest. Plus if they break something they replace it. They just won't hide it or act like it was already broke. But if you don't feel comfortable take it to the dealer.

If it's a 3.5 then the labor is appx $192.00 plus parts. If it's a 2.7, then it has a timing chain and would be appx $378.00 plus parts.

Thank you so much! That is a much better price than I have been quoted before. I have been trying to decide if I should fix it or sale it like it is.
