Anyone know what their salary is starting out? I heard that respiratory therapists start out at like $20 an hour. Just wanted to verify this. I'm looking to go into this field.

I would say not. My aunt is a respiratory therapist and I don't think she makes that much. But she really enjoys her job.

respiratory therapist give breathing treatments, set up cpap and bipaps, they draw ABG's which is drawing blood from the artery in the wrist, they intubate people in respiratory distress and set up and run the ventilator or life support some call it.other than giving breathing treatments its pretty intense, but cool as hell.a crt wont start out but 12-15 and hour but if ya get the extra schooling and become an RRT then you can make from prolly 17-20 to start out and as you get more time in you'll get more. and it depends if you work full time you wont make as much as a prn worker. some therapist work in sleep labs, i dont no what they make. some therapists do respiratory home health, i dont no what they make either. Its a great job because you are not tied down to just a few patients. and anytime theres trauma trust me they always call respiratory to come so you get to see lots of different stuff. there are other things they assist with like bronchoscopy's, thorentinsesis, how ever you spell it, its draining fluid off the lungs, and much more you can look it up on the internet .hope this helps

It is a really good job. But be aware that if you have a family, that you will probably be working nights. They do not explain that in the program when you start. They gear more towards like its a day job and there are lots of day positions open. WRONG ! I graduated with my degree and ended up getting out. My family became more important. You will be working all holidays, and weekends. If you are single or a very supportive family, it would be a great thing. You can also look into going to Memphis and only working the weekend and making more.

Where did you go to school? I understand the holidays and working weekends. That's mainly like that in every health care position.

Was it easy to get a job when you graduated? That's the only part I'm worried about. That's where I'll be going to school also.

Been in profession for 2 1/2 yrs. I made more money working out of state than in AR. You make more working night shift. RRT usually only get $1.00 more an hour. As far as school I went to Black River and was very disappointed. I did not feel they had me prepared for the boards. I had to learn alot on my own, and the CRT/RRT's out in the field. Nursing is probably the way to go, they make more money and you have different job opportunities in that field.

Almost any position in the medical field is this way. I'm a nurse, and I have had employers tell me the job comes first, family second. NOT. My family comes first too. Several years ago I started a job at Green Acres right before the holidays. They scheduled me Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Eve and New Years Day. Employers don't care. They just want you to work, and cover the staffing numbers required to keep the facility in check

I, too, was disappointed with Black River. At the time, we had a sick teacher that was never there. Almost all of our class did not pass the boards. I had a job while going to school. When do clinical rotations, you may be offered a position because they see how you work...or they will keep you in mind if a position becomes open. I don't know how hard it is now to get a job, but im sure you can get one. You might have to drive.
