I can't believe how far Principal Enid Schonewise and the Papillion LaVista School district have blown this out of proportion! This should have been handled internally (in the social studies class).

The two students were actively involved in a discussion on the election in a Social Studies class. the discussion turned racial (Its our first African Americn president elect, of course race was an issue). A racial slur was used (with reference to President elect Obama's religious faith). Yes, it was wrong to make the statement. For some people, the election was very emotional, and the day right after the elction, many people (especially here in Nebraska) were upset with the outcome). The racial slur was not pointed at any individual directly at the High School (although I'm sure some individuals were offended by the comment).

The suspension has done a couple things. It has taught all the students at the school, that it is better NOT to participate in classroom discussions, since something you say could get you suspended. And, it probably caused the racism these 2 individuals have to grow..

This unfortunate incident should have been handled internally in the classroom, or at most, at the principal's office. No suspension was warrented. Principal Enid Schonewise and the School District are just as wrong as the two indiduals who uttered the racial slurs. Shame on them all!

This action does not seem unusual for the good Dr.

This Nebraskan (I'm of German descent) was not upset, but elated by the election of Obama. I can only hope that all Nebraskans, black AND white, will quit teaching racism to their children!! I have witnessed this plague of society work both ways. To quote one citizen's plea, "Can't we all just get along?" Think about it. Might as well, I don't think either segment is leaving the country.
