I was reading the Omaha World Hearld this morning and it listed everyone that was running. I happened to see the same name mentioned twice so I thought they had a mistake, so I checked the Election Commissioner website and it looks like they were right.

This lady is running for both District 6 of the new Learning Community and also Ward 3 of the Papillion City Council.

Jan Huff same address on both. Not sure who she is, but I'm suprised you can do that - what happens if she wins both? Can she serve in both?

I have heard of Jan, but I can't place her. What is her background or qualifications for holding two offices?

I think she might be a he. Pretty sure he tried to run for city council last time but did not make it. I think his background was a contractor of some kind down at the base.

I got confused because there was a Jan Davis and a Jan Huff on the ballot last time. One was a he and one was a she. One I know worked for the gas company but thought the other was a contractor of some sort.

I think this was the he Jan and the contractor Jan

I don't know Jan Huff but he has registered for both seats. According to the DEX telephone listing, there is a Jan & Patricia at that address leaving one to presume Jan is male--in my backward way of thinking anyway! Sarpy Republican Women are hosting a forum on April 8th for Sarpy County voters to meet Republican candidates prior to the May primary. Jan is a registered Republican and has been invited to be present. Advance purchase tickets are encouraged and proceeds go to the SRW annual scholarship fund and phone cards for troops serving overseas. Email me at fancyfreestupic@yahoo.com if you'd like details.

1) Your assumption on Jan being the male makes sense :)

2) Since you seem to be up on politics do you know how one person can run for multiple offices? If I vote for that person in both I am throwing away one of my votes but I don't know which one until the election is over - because if they win both they will have to immediately resign one since you can't hold both - doesn't seem to be a fair pridicament (sp?) to put the voter in --- might be a great question/issue to pose to him at your forum,

3) What time is your fourm?
Huh - has to be a mistake

Great points! I had not thought about the thrown away vote.
If I vote for him for both and he wins both then turns one down so he can hold the other, HE JUST INVALIDATED one of my votes which he asked for - that creates a fundamental trust issue.
Then when he walks away from the one seat to take the other seat and then someone else who I didn't vote for takes that vacated seat he just stole my vote.
No matter who the person is and how much I may like/dislike them this should not be allowed to occur.
Are you sure the Election Commissioner actually allows it or is it an oversight?

WOW - if this is true then even if I really like his candidate for one item I can't vote for him since he might discount my vote by immediately resigning. I can't go there - that is not right.

By default I will be discounting him in both races and only looking at the opponents since then at least I'm assured if the person I vote for they will actually serve.

Does any other county in Nebraska allow this or is it unique to Sarpy? Maybe that previous poster from the Republican Women organization can weigh in and clarify.

Is this an issue to take up with the County Election Commission or the Secretary of State? I agree, it just does not seem right.

Intersting situation. Here is a link to a Public Integrity article. Not the exact situation but some of the principals might apply.

Jan Huff did run for City Council in the past. Because HIS views are so "out there" he was not elected. He also formerly appeared in the role as Johnny Boykn's puppy dog. He was the pot-bellied, middle aged fellow who ran about snapping photos and videotaping Boykin's grandstanding over the Wal-Mart issue. He also strongly supported Boykn's ill-fated and divisive run for mayor of Papillion. So far as I know, he has NO qualifications for either office.

You are too funny. I did see that another lady filed for learning community so at least Jan has competition in both of the races he is running for.

The above is interesting. I wonder if the paper will do any article to help clarify the situation as we approach the November election?

The OWH had an article today about the Learning Community election and how some of the folks are starting early campaigns. No specific mention of Mr Huff but I do hope the press tries to clarify the situation of one person running for two offices at the same time prior to the Nov election.

It appears Jan took his name off the ballot - that's a good thing - now he is just running for a single race - I feel better.

Just looked at the election website and for his district it listed 9 people:

(6) Douglas County:
----------
(5) Omaha - Julie Brewer, Mark Trenerry, Kerry Kratina, Jim Mullen, & Teresa Vann
(1) Valley - Tom McMahon

(3) Sarpy County:
----------
(1) Gretna - Mike Avery
(1) LaVista - Jim Thompson
(1) Papillion - Gaylene Stupic

If anyone knows: Is he the little guy that stands on the corners in the morning's with the hunter orange vest waving the Jan Huff City Council sign? or is that someone working for him?

There are now 12 on the ballot (1 from Douglas and 2 from Sarpy) for the Learning Community and Jan is not one of them; however, his wife Patricia is.

That clears up any confusion regarding a dual filing - the OWH sure confused things with that original article that ws mentioned at the beginning of this thread.

(7) Douglas County:
----------
(6) Omaha - Dorrel Nutter, Julie Brewer, Mark Trenerry, Kerry Kratina, Jim Mullen, & Teresa Vann
(1) Valley - Tom McMahon

(5) Sarpy County:
----------
(1) Bellevue - Richard Alcala
(1) Gretna - Mike Avery
(1) LaVista - Jim Thompson
(1) Papillion - Gaylene Stupic and Patricia Huff

Yes, the 50-ish man with the vest and sign is in fact Jan Huff. He is also the man who has a large sign in the back of his pickup and drives around the community waving at everyone.

Personally, I have found his actions to be inconsiderate, distracting and hazardous to other drivers; especially in and around the elementary schools in the morning when drivers need to be extra careful and aware of their surroundings.

My 2 Cents
