As a Texan, I have always revered the great military genius and overall heroism of Robert E. Lee. However, there is an enclave in Texas, El Paso, that is an anomaly. It is much like Washington DC, due to the fact that the biggest employer has nearly always been the Federal Government. El Paso is unlike the rest of Texas and the majority would probably rather be part of New Mexico than Texas, and the subject of "secession" often comes up. After the Civil War, El Paso was run by carpetbaggers, and the city provided the State Senate majority leader, Union veteran, Col. Albert J. Fountain. After Reconstruction, he relocated upriver in Mesilla, NM. El Paso has been run by Democrats for nearly a century and has probably the most corrupt politicians of any city of any size in the U.S. More than twenty public officials have been indicted or imprisoned in the past decade. This cleanup, mostly by the FBI, is well documented on the Internet and other news services.

I have not lived near El Paso for many years, but I had to serve there as a border guard back in the 60s and 70s. I still read their local online newspaper mostly because the city it is still a center for immigration problems and is a sanctuary city for illegal aliens by vote of the City and County governments. Last week, I was stunned by the fact that a street on nearby Fort Bliss, Robert E. Lee Road, was renamed Buffalo Soldier Road. I checked and there were more than a dozen streets in Fort Bliss with names that referred to no one in particular, some streets more traveled than Robert E. Lee Road. It is apparent that Robert E.Road was deliberately selected. If the name change had been within the City of El Paso, it would not have surprised me, for the overwhelming majority of them do not call themselves Texans, but identify more with Mexico. However, since the street was on Fort Bliss, it is apparent that the Commander in Chief, Barack Obama, or his staff, is behind this iconoclastic erasure of the name Robert E. Lee Road. What amazed me was that only one contributor to their forum mentioned it, and he with a tone of sardonic, smug, satisfaction.

I think that this street name change, that must necessarily be attributed to the Obama Administration, and is consistent with his voiced views on race relations and agitation, will become wider known, especially in the Deep South. However, I submit to you that El Paso's apathetic reaction, or lack thereof, toward this iconoclastic attack on Lee by this Administration does not represent the sentiments of the overwhelming majority of Texans.
