Coyotes in Palos Heights

Did anyone else hear coyotes howling last night in what I think would be the south part the original Westgage subdivision just before midnight and another animal that sounded like it was in pain? I was just letting my dogs out before going to bed and was totally creeped out by what I heard. The full-ish moon didn't help matters.

My neighbors said they have seen a coyote that was pretty big - about the size of a German Shepard - wandering down our street.

Coyotes are common around here. With all of the forest preserves and the overpopulation of deer they have plenty of food. You might want to watch your dogs a little more when you let them outside.

I know that they are common. The coyotes and deer are traveling almost all the way up to 127th from the woods off 131st. Once I saw about 30 deer running back into the forest back by 131st where it dead ends behind the new townhouses. It was like they were doing a conga line! LOL!

My husband and I saw a pack of coyotes preparing to chase a group of deer over off of LaGrange and 95th. They were spreading out as though they were going to circle the deer and saw them all start to run.(Can't stop on LaGrange to see what would happen or we would have been hit.)

I guess I just never heard the coyotes in the area howling like that before. And I really, really think the other sound I heard was an animal being attacked. It was more like random screams and not in synch with the howling. I don't mean to be mean here but I hope it was just a deer and not someone's pet.

We keep our dogs in the backyard and don't let them run out there long because it is all pretty much still mud - PH is pretty much swampland so our backyard floods every spring killing any grass that may have been there. I stand by the door and tell them to do their business and get inside. I only let them out there when I'm going to be out there too.

Actually, when fox start making noise they sound like a wounded animal. I thought a fox was attacking my neighbor's dog once but it turned out that it was the fox making the noise, not the dog.

11-18-09, 40 acre woods in palos park, east of lagrange around 2:30 pm, I was working in the area, Im a utility worker and was working in area so i pulled into the parking area at the 40 acre woods to finish some paper work, after 5-10 minutes a very large wolf or coyote came walking through, I know wolves are not supposed to be in IL but it looked more like a wolf than a coyote. And way to big to be a dog, also mouth very bloody like it just ate a animal or rodent. Anyone else see this thing??? Very close to homes in area.

I worry about the animals not having enough to eat in the winter, so I throw beer cans in my front yard, and a few old cars. My neighbor has a television they can have also.

A coyote is not large enough to take down a deer moron. Any fake rapes in Palos lately.

I've seen a large canine while mountain biking on the trails in that area about a year ago.
It sure looked like a timber wolf or grey wolf to me.
I've seen many coyotes in my neighborhood and this was no coyote as it was much larger and it just looked like a wolf.
Since they are pack animals and this guy was solo I assume someone let it loose that probably had it as a pet. Most impressive was when it turned and jumped 6 feet over a down tree trunk without any effort or moving forward.

There was just a story in the news that coyote moms will be protecting their newly born cubs at this time (May/June) so don't be surprised if you see them following you to ensure you aren't there to hurt their pups when you are out in the woods or on the trails.
