Mayor Peloquin,

In the city council meetings you said that a new business that would "please everyone" would be announced at the August council meeting.

Well, it's September. What's going into the empty Jewel building?
The 7th ward haven't heard from you.

In his defense, it IS hard to hear the cries of your constituency from all the way out in New Lenox...

I believe it's going to be a Safeway grocery (or maybe Sav-a-lot?) and Walgreens is moving into half the building. No news yet on what will go into the Walgreens building.

Please not a Sav-a-Lot...we've got enough crappy stores in Blue Island already.

What Blue Island doesn't need is another TIF district. Why is Blue Island giving tax breaks to the larger companies while the smaller business struggle to pay their taxes?

There is no way a Sav-a-lot will "share" half of the old Jewel building. Jewel Osco and Sav-a-lot are owned by Supervalu. I really can't see Supervalu sharing anything with one of its competitors like Walgreens.

I heard a gambling casino and off track betting salon. You did not hear it from me right. Peloquin was waiting for the Governor to sign the gambling bill. It didn't happen so now....pffft!

The Blue Island Jewel was a training store much like a teaching hospital, which explains the constant change in store managers.
Jewel agreed to the beautiful new green space in Chicago then discovered; if they moved or not they had to pay for the space on 119th St. as agreed. The store has not done well and will not renew the lease.
Jewel owns the Blue Island building site, it is not abandoned; it is not in disrepair, the property taxes are paid, they are not selling and there are plans to return as a Sav-a-lot store.
Jewel Osco and Sav-a-lot are owned by Supervalu. The store will provide more shopping opportunities most particularly for people who live in BI.

Once again - no official word from the city. The property is a gapping missing front tooth in a mouth full of missing teet that is now the Blue Island business district.

I will believe it when I see it - but I expect whatever it is - years from now - won't be reflective of any cohesive "plan" nor will it improve our city's image.

The Blue Island community deserves better!
