I drove by there Monday and there's still stuff inside, some donated furniture outside, but the closed sign is on the door. No notices from any official entity, and the phone still works (just rings and rings, but not disconnected) so I don't think they were closed down by anyone. Anyone know what day they were last open? I've been calling since Sunday 1/14 with no answer.

I've been going there for 16 years and I miss them! The open and closed numbers on the door are off and it says closed on the door but the gate is open and all the stuff is still inside. It is like everyone disappeared! PLEASE RE OPEN!

I've been calling daily since Jan 14th, and the phone just rings - no one answers (or it's busy because someone else is calling too). I actually thought about calling the police in case someone was inside - that's how weird it looks when you drive by. But since there are no cars at all parked anywhere on the lot, I figured there probably wasn't anyone inside to worry about. And I don't usually think things like that.

My husband and I were 2 of the first customers when Last Chance originally opened. We deserve an explanation. Searched news regarding Bill, the owner and Sam, a former manager but nothing found. Only an article regarding a man exposing himself in the store to an 11 year old girl, in January but nothing else?? We deserve an explanation.

I looked up the corportion and noticed that they'd had a change of officers last June, and that the registered agent had resigned. Also notice the corporation was noted as in active, but that's often because the company doesn't make the annual report filing in May (not that uncommon). Couldn't find out anything else.

I loved the Last Chance and shopped there weekly. As much as I loved shopping there, I feel terrible for all the hard working people who worked there and made it a great place to thrift. Now they are all out of work and it was not their fault but the fault of the management that caused the closing. I'm sorry to hear the store won't be reopened.

From what I understand, Last Chance was there to support not the employees but a Vietnam Veterans organization. I grieve the loss of well deserved benefits these veterans realised. As far as the customer goes, this thrift provided clothing and other items to the less fortunate in Pinellas / Pasco County. Here is another incident of possibly the rich developers hiding behind dirty lawyers to grab land and deny resources to the poor. Why hasn't the St Pete Times stepped in and investigated? They did do an article on the store December 23, 2002, written by Kelly Brice. Anyway, I will miss the store as a source of inexpensive entertainment items for my children. I suppose the few other area thrifts may raise prices now. Ellis Prewitt, Dunedin, Florida

Yes the store was supposed to support the Vietnam Veterans Organization, but as far as the employees as with any charity, the employees must be paid. The drivers, who put in 8 hour days, and the solicitors, who called over 400 people per day and the people who worked in the store. I don't think anyone would do it for free, most charities pay their employees and have volunteers to help out also. The store benefited many underprivileged people in the area because of their low prices, also the workers, will miss the pay most of them are in low income situations also. Also the rent had to be paid on the building plus repair and fuel for the trucks. Also phones and utilities, the charity itself recieved its part. Unfortunately, there is no free ride. The store will be missed.

I couldn't believe it ! Friends told me they'd seen police there and store had "been closed down".
Wish someone would call newspaper or tv reporter to investigate what's going on. MORE IMPORTANTLY... get another store going with the same wonderful people and prices.

I went to the store one weekend and on the door it said it was closed for tax reasons...This really stinks because I loved that store. Plus what are they going to do with all the stuff left in the store. I wonder if they are going to have a last sale or something. Maybe an auction?

Ok, HWH was curious too... since we often donated our overflow retail items. So sunbiz.org says it was For Profit Corp, irs.gov charity search reveals no such organization. Does anyone know exactly which Veteran Organization last chance contributed too? Maybe they can help with some answers... Also, does anyone know if the tax issues where Federal, State, Local or all...

Last chance will be reopening soon under new management. Previous employees should keep checking this site for more info on who to contact. They will be hired back if posible. This should all happen within the next 30 or 45 days. For all those loyal customers there will be a sign at the store soon announcing the reopening date.
