Hi BOGO!

It does make a lot of sense. In my old store, a lot of the old timers making decent money are being weeded out. They are hiring all teenagers. My thinking is when they close, less severance that has to be paid out. I also hear that a manager from a store about 30 miles north of us came into my old store and said that Albertson's asked her to stay until the end and this manager will get a "very nice severance package". So I think the writing is on the wall. And I know the store I was in is in NO way whatsoever making 300k a week!! They'd be lucky if they are making 200k a week. And this manager that is in my old store just came there about 6 months ago, and his nickname in the company is "the closer"!!!

I wouldn't be at all surprised if they are gone by year's end.

I happened to come across your article in my readings about Albertsons stores here in Utah. All but 3 or 4 Albertsons are closing here in Utah, and I couldn't be happier! It is so ridiculously overpriced compared to the neighboring stores. It's always dead-empty there too, I don't see how they've managed to stay open so long! The good thing is that Associated Foods bought all the Utah stores, so maybe instead of Albertsons, we'll have a store that's worth going to!

By the way - our Albertsons here in town used to be Publix, but I guess that didn't do so well either. It's been Albertsons since before I lived here, so I wouldn't know what a Publix store is like.

I only hit them for the special sale items (loss leaders) and unlike a lot of people, I know my prices. I look at the prices for non-sale items and I just laugh. Even ketchup is pricey there, Wal-Mart and Aldi practically give that away.

I too am surprised they've lasted this long. How is Winn Dixie surviving? I never go in there at all.

Except for milk and a few staples I only buy the BOGO specials from Publix. Several of the Publix stores here have dull witted managers who stand and talk to the security lguard ALL DAY.

They raised the prices claiming it was due to the price of gas. Gas went down, their prices didn't.

They are a lot cleaner than Winn Dixie though.

The Grocery store stocks play a big roll all this. Their stocks dropped after 911 and have never been the same. Now add Walmart to the mix all these retailers are competing to stay alive, hence all the terrific adds, bogo and 10 for 10 sales. These retailer take a huge loss on some of these items(and yes they do recoup their loss on plenty of items that arenít on sale) The point is they want you business, and these sales drive in their customer base.

In my state I have 6 Kroger stores in less than 15 miles near my home, 4 publix, and several Walgreens, CVSís stores, 1 Sams club and 3 Walmats. Kroger sells gas, Walgreens and CVS are trying to capture the pharmacy market from the local grocers. Its all about the strongest and largest companies staying alive.

Ablertsons has been closing down stores for the quite a few years now, and to my knowledge they are Union stores. I find it hard to believe people are being sent home or working hours less then what is allowed by Union rules. As for Non Union store, Publix, Walmarts they can work you as many or less hours as they wish. Walmart stores bring in huge tax revenues to the Counties they enter, but as you can see as Albertsons continues to close its stores, they also have an adverse effect on others.

This is an interesting article if anyone is interested, notice the date is 06.

Grocery chain Albertsons has announced it will close eight stores in Florida, including two in Seminole County.

The stores to close are at 80 W. Mitchell Hammock Road in Oviedo and 300 W. Lake Mary Blvd. in Sanford.

The stores should close in mid-February. Albertsons is trying to find new tenants.

I shop at both Publix and Albertson's (and occasionally Wal-mart. Albertson's, is right across the street from the other Publix I had shopped.

While I cannot attest to employee treatment from either company, I can say that it depended upon the employee as to whether or not they went above or beyond to provide good service to the customer. Perhaps poor management could contribute to bad morale; however, an employee that cares about the customer (smiling in the advent of a bad day) is one that is difficult to find; but they do exist... and in several stores.

I can count on my fingers and toes how many times I've gone to purchase 'meat' at publix and had some person mutter or state out loud "I should have gone to "Penn Dutch".(Apparently there are better prices there, but one must pay by inconvenience.)

I really liked shopping at Albertson's near me, it was not crowded, lots of aisles and many items outside both nearby Publix stores can be found.

It did, however, have a very smelly fish area unfortunately, so I tried to avoid that (I don't eat fish anyway). For other meats, the buy 1, get 1 free was really neat and since I don't eat tartar, as long as the age of the meat was not outside FDA's expiration, I was ok with it.

I think the thing that really turned me *off* about shopping there was that irritating rotating disk counter at the check-out line. It seemed to take longer, especially when unloading the cart after the person before you.(Along with trying to arrange items so that they maximize space and don't get flung off.) More times than not, I also ended up pushing the cart through the people line instead of the cashier's side, my ignorance, but it made things more difficult and take longer.

I don't know if all stores were configured with this, but to be honest, I found it difficult to adapt (when other stores used the similar 'treadmill' design). When I mentioned to my wife about the closing of the store, she also mentioned that the check-out counters were one thing she disliked as well.

It would be really sad if we were to find out that customers were turned off to Albertson's because of it's "ease of use" on check-out. Perhaps if they upgraded their check-out lines, they might have lasted longer. It's not as if it were a poor choice of locations; one of the stores they are closing in South Florida is in Pembroke Pines (one of the fastest growing cities several years ago). That store was right across the street from Publix.

It's sad to see them go, it was a good experience visiting their store down here; I hope the *good* employees who really care about the customers get assistance in relocation.

Publix is so much better then Albertson witch has over priced items and much of there 10 for 10 deals are a rip of in witch you have to buy all 10 items to get the deal unlike at Publix were you can buy one and still get the deal. Publix is much better.
that is untrue i know i worked for albertsons before our store was closed.

Albertsons always had great prices especially on its meat products. Publix is horrible. The stores always smells like dead old people. The staff is very rude and the management is very lazy and overpaid. The prices are ridiculous and it is not a pleasure to ever walk in the door. We can only hope that Publix fails and starts to close down.

This is a joke, right? Publix is so much cleaner and fresher than all the rest, it is astounding. For years Albertsons and WinnDixie have had that going out of business look. Soon it will just be Publix and Walmart, and Publix is much, much better, and they carry Blue Bell ice cream....lol...

This is rediculos some of the comments albersons is closing because of walmart these stores cannot compete with super walmarts if a supper walmart opened next to a publix publix would close too... the best always wins and walmart knows exactly what is required of them to win.

Publix is the best. They are always consistent. That is why they are opening so many new stores. They are doing everthing right. They treat the employees great and most of all they really care about the customers. I will pay a little more because I get such great service and the stores are always clean and organized. I wont shop anywhere else!!!
What planet are you living on? Every time I shop at my local Publix, the workers are either blocking the aisles to the items I wish to purchase or have this "I don't care" attitude if you ask them for directions. It sounds like you should change the name of your town to 'Nirvana'.

Perhaps it's about public perception? Would you go to Manny, Moe or Jack for a gallon of Milk? Wal-Mart was a place to go if you needed something outside the realm of necessity, but they are apparently strong-arming their way into it.

Perhaps one day there will be a "shop all" store, where you can get your gun, bullets and a gallon of milk.*duh*

I worked for Publix several years ago and I only ever bought their BOGO items as a rule because they were a real deal. unlike Albertson's who jacked up the price top double and then offered BOGO

I also was affected by the closings. My husband and I worked in the Palm Beach Gardens store, and we miss it terribly! I work in another chain now, but not nearly as happy as I was at Albertsons! I took a huge paycut, and we're struggling alot now.
