I worked in juvenile detention and I saw kids shoplift or do other things so that they could go to juvenile detention where they would get three hot meals, a place to shower and safe place to sleep. He is lucky he is not in legal trouble. Alot of foster kids go from being in foster care where they get their basic needs met (such as food shelter medical and dental care as well as a chance for an education) to the streets to jail.
Now he is out of the system and he has no place to stay or basic needs provided for free. It will take alot of work on his part to survive because he does not have the emotional, physical or mental supports and strengths the rest of us take for granted. Good Luck.
Many had parents who were serving prison time and might be living with a mom, aunt, grandmother, etc. who couldn't handle them without a male figure.
One study has been done that shows that teen males who are mentored by a male do so much better and that it actually changes the biochemistry. It has been proven in the animal kingdom too where male elephants would run amuck and even go on killing rampages.
It seems that this young man has taken steps to turn his life around...driver's license, job apt.
Give him praise, not condemnation for the past. It doesn't matter where he has been. It matters where he is going.
