Some teens leaving foster care may face homelessness

Full story: El Paso Times

Jesus Palacios, 19, recently spent his nights on a bench in Memorial Park. Palacios "aged out" of foster care at age 18 and found himself homeless.

Let's see here: 29 foster homes, disruptive student, never got his drivers license, quit school. This sure sounds like a young man who made some poor choices. The foster care system has transitional foster care services for a child getting ready to age out of the system.
On another note. This particular young man has been through some drama in his life and he can't maintain friendships. He needs some mental health services to deal with his issues or he will forever need the support of government programs.

Ummmm.....19? Get a job and figure it out. Even teenagers that are raised with their parents and get the boot right after high school have to figure it out. I'm sorry but I feel no sympathy for a young adult who can't go out and work at Mc'Dees and sell newspapers on the weekends to make ends meet. It's called life! Stop feeling sorry for yourself and get out of the whole.

How about the military? He wouldn't be alone, he'd have a place to stay and a job to do.

He is lucky he is not in legal trouble. Alot of foster kids go from being in foster care where they get their basic needs met (such as food shelter medical and dental care as well as a chance for an education) to the streets to jail.
Now he is out of the system and he has no place to stay or basic needs provided for free. It will take alot of work on his part to survive because he does not have the emotional, physical or mental supports and strengths the rest of us take for granted. Good Luck.

The comments here are dumb-founding.

"Social Worker"- Way to go on the typical snide, insolent remarks. This kid is EXACTLY what CPS intends for kids- Be life-long consumers of government services.

"Teacher"- Way to go on the condescension. Schools are doing NOTHING towards teaching kids any job skills or even HOW to learn something.

"Joe"- With no diploma or GED, kids CANNOT join the "all volunteer" military.

"TSM"- Our culture teaches kids nothing but sex, violence, laziness, and narcissism. The idea of controlling your destiny is a foreign concept.

Creating failure is what the entire CPS system is about. It is being done deliberately. They are utterly evil.

And in reference to the article, it is really sad for these kids to have to go through such a hard time. i know its not easy but i hope they keep their heads up high and i wish them much faith, hope and prayers.

Social worker and Teacher are right. There is a time when we must take responsibility of our lives, and that includes taking the guidance that is offered to you, not sitting back and waiting for people that feel sorry for you to help you out. Remember, give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime. (Plus, let him know that there will be days the fish won't bite and that's not a reason to give up)

So "Another SW" what do YOU know about fishing. You became a Social Worker because you weren't bright enough to become a Psychiatrist.

Go to any college that has a Social Work and Psychiatry courses -- The stupidest kids on campus are ALWAYS the Social Work and Psychiatry majors.

The problem is- knowing how to learn and WORK is a lost skill.

I left foster care at 15 and rented my own apartment, while working at Thomason (UMC) and going to school. When it was too much, I went for my GED and I took an EMT class. 14 years later, I'm a single mom, paying my bills, not on welfare, continue to help patients and have the respect and love of my daughter. Shame on you people that think that CPS cannot help these children. They give you the tools, it's how you use them.

"On another note", this self-proclaimed "social worker" is revealing personal information about this persons case? Too bad this person can post anonymously - if they were caught revealing personal information whatever entity hires them could fire them for revealing personal details about this kid.

That ought to tell you something about this so-called "social worker". You ought to look at your own self, instead of trying to blame this kid for everything that has happened to him. Sure, everyone is responsible for their choices but some people don't really have much of a chance to begin with.

I hope this is not a typical example of the type of "social worker" we have in El Paso.

You have no idea how stressed out and overworked CPS workers are, and how much effort they put in to try and prevent kids from falling into these situations. Social workers are by FAR the most underpaid and unappreciated workers in our society, since so much of what they do goes on behind the scenes. If you think being a teacher requires patience and caring about helping children, multiply that by 10x and you'll get a social worker. Yes, there are a few incompetent ones as there are in any profession, but for the most part they are a class act. But yes, the system itself needs a review to see how to curb these failure rates.

And judging by your website you have a sever misunderstanding of the CRC and its aims. You sound like one of those conspiracy theorists who think the UN will take parents to world court and try them at the Hague.
