Spring is almost here (well, don't look out your window) and I'm going to need some work done on my roof, and maybe have an addition built onto my house. When it comes to contractors in this area (or anywhere) who can you trust? Can anyone recommend some good contractors that will keep their word and do what they say? I've had bad experiences in the past and I don't want a repeat performance. It seems like most contractors just want money, money, money and then as they get close to the end of the job they never want to finish. Everyone I've talked to has had the same experience. Do they teach this in contractor school? How to screw your customers 101. And, I don't want a contractor to take a look at my house and upcharge just because he thinks I can pay more, I want a fair contractor. Is that an oxymoron?

A word of advice, go out of the County. Better yet, if you've got the money go out of the region. You'll get nothing but screwed if you try to deal with this bunch around here. All you'll end up getting is a headache when you have to hire somebody else to clean up the mess you've been left with. The only hope you've got is if you hire an outside contracting manager to oversee every breath they take and put them under a contract so tight they can't take a shit unless you deduct it from their draw, otherwise good luck to ya ol' buddy.

Amen, brother! Too many of these cranks think they can just slap a sign on their door, buy a hammer and saw and they're a contractor. They have no regulation and no oversight from any governing body. They don't have to worry about any inspections, so no worries if their work is up to any kind of standards. Who's left holding the bag? The homeowner. They'll overcharge and overestimate the amount of materials, so you'll end up not only overpaying but they'll end up with a truckload of shingles, drywall mud, nails, etc to take home with them for their next job. It's called "padding", and they do it all the time unless you're a sharp cookie, my friend. I've caught several around here working on my place and kicked the ladder out from under them. My advice is this, find a reputable contractor with a brick and mortar office. You know, one you can actually walk into and sit down and speak with someone. No, not in the passenger side of his truck. Then, gather several estimates along with several referrals from satisfied customers. Compare, and make an informed decision. And, trust me, even going to those lengths it's difficult to get it done within the constraints you have set. You'll ultimately run into a few cost overruns, and probably get pissed at your contractor because he's too slow. But, at least you've done your homework and know he's probably going to do a good job, and six months later the whole thing's not going to fall apart or start to lean, or even worse be out of square.

freddie lemaster gets the job done and does it right. i ouldnt recommend carl king he cant put his cigarettes down long enough to do anything. i know someone who hired him, he never did finish the job and the work he did the new contractor had to tear it up and redo it. i believe he was on something(acted like it)
