I just got out of a meeting in which we discussed some cost-saving measures for our company in this area. Red cards from corporate came down and now we make the tough decision on the extent of these measures.
The Wal-Mart, Store #1233 of Paintsville, KY has had continuous low performance scores the past year, 17% below the expected profit levels for a store of this magnitude.
Despite recent management changes, payroll cuts, and sales promotions, the store continues to fail meeting the benchmarks set by corporate.
We are examining all options, but the current plan, if approved by corporate is as follows:
a) Workforce to be cut by 50% at the beginning of 2011.
b) Store hours will be changed from a 24/7 operation to 6 AM - 11 PM.
c) By the middle of May, the store will close its doors and the building will go up for lease.
I was NOT supposed to divulge this information, but my job is in question, too...so who cares?
That's tough to hear and I hope it does not happen. But businesses are closing all over the place so I don't doubt it. Sorry to hear about your job in jeopardy too. I was laid off last year and it is tough out there. Thanks for the heads-up. I guess everyone will be going to K-Mart soon.

If WalMart would put their layaway department back, that would help alot.. Those stupid walmart cards are not going to make as much as the layaway did. I know people who have worked at walmart for 20 years and they don't even qualify for a walmart card. BRING BACK LAYAWAY!!!! KMart doesn't have half the crap walmart does.. I hate having to go there to put stuff in layaway..

I wish they would close They suck up every retain dollar out there and wire it out of town before the sun sets each day. You may not be aware but there are citys out there that have not allowed walmart to come to their town. I say get out of Paintsville and maybe some of our local business could have a shot at comming back. It is sad however to think about all of the welfare checkers that would be homeless at the first of every month.

Yes. That's why it gets Supercenter of the Year awards so often, because of its poor performance.

They have a freeze on hiring right now, idk what that means for the store. But it can't be good.

A hiring freeze usually means that a company is evaluating current employees performance as it relates to the profit of the business. Profit per head - so to speak. A process is started whereby the management provides input into who can adapt to a changing corporate culture -such as a new pricing strategy or some other change. I hope no one loses their jobs in Paintsville and there really isn't anything to do but wait and see. If anyone is an employee there now, the best thing to do is fly low under the radar and do not draw attention to yourself through behavior or absenteeism - just keep your head down and do your job. If they are looking at layoffs or store closings, chances are they are formulating a short-list of people to let go within the next six months. This is common practice in this economy and with rumors of a second recession, lots of companies have hiring freezes going on - it's a wait and see approach.

I could care less about whether the store has "layaway". But I can tell you this store will not close until just after hell freezes over. I know someone thought it was funny to start this rumor, but I wish it was true. This store has chased away most other business in Johnson County and I wish I could say, "Good bye Wally World'.
