So sad. Poor thing the sausage dog. Seventy pounds vs Seven pounds. Moke action or what?!?! I had about five pit bulls over the years. It's not if they going scrap it's when and how much no matter how cute and nice you think your bull is. It's in their DNA. I think it's better if we make it illegal for pit bulls to have owners who think otherwise. Dog sense or what?

Just a slow day here because my fighting chicks are hatching and I have to stay close.
So besides watching bully type dogs and checking out their rear ends, why don't you start an advice column as you seem to get off on giving people advice. Who exactly is everyone who is asking for my personal info. I have owned Britich made vehicles, including one Range Rover, and they are junk. I prefer going to the gym because I like being around musclemen. Hey, you probably like that too, right? I will have to watch for Alice because she must sound very intelligent. |

My pet dog and I was attacked by my neighbors pitbull, and to this day I am always looking out the door before leaving the house because that dog is still down the street. Even the pitbull's loud barks give me chicken skin. It is never the dog's fault, but the owner's ignorance.

Hawai'i students are 49th and 50th in the nation on standardized test scores for reading and math. That makes Hawai'i the dumbest state in the nation. No wonder we have to many pitbulls.

JMiguel, you'd better stop now. Each new post of yours brings you lower and lower on the respectability chart. |

Ban PIT BULLS! They were bred to fight, and I would bet that if one were to review dog attacks most were carried out by PIT BULLS. As a dog owner of lab, the most common thing I hear pit owners say to me as the dog's are tugging at the leash,"He/She is Friendly". They are a nuisance and the one in the attack reported on should be destroyed.

Now come on; on the front page a dog attacking another dog? Don't we have more important news than that to report on?

so what happens if the dog attacks you and you kill the dog in self defense...what charges are they going to press against you, the dog killer?

I agree that with the proper training, Pit Bulls are a fine breed. The problem is, this breed is not appropriate for the general public, because it requires special training. It's certainly not for the average moke OR haole!
Pit Bulls have an extremely high predator drive, they often display dog aggression, and they typically have less patience than other breeds. They are the number one breed in reported attacks on humans or other animals. They have been banned in the UK and also Ontario province, as well as across the US. I believe that they should be banned in Hawaii, or at the very least, require special mandatory training of dog and owner, with a special license issued if they pass, and restrictions on how they are kept and where they are allowed (no beach, no off-leash, etc.). But there are so many other great breeds out there, and enforcement of special rules would be difficult, so banning them seems to be an obvious choice. |

The law is already in place, no dogs on beaches or off leash anywhere except for dog parks. I do not take mine out much because of other loose dogs.
Speaking only for myself, after having my pitbulls I do not think I would want any other type dog. Not an ego issue because I do not care about that, but they have funny personlities and are fun to own. But I agree that there are other wonderful dogs around. The big problem is back yard breeders who will breed/sell anything to make $$$$$. I was lucky when I bought mine (unknowingly) from a byb and got a real sweetie. I know people whose female has bit the owner but regularly have pups for sale from this dog. Also I am not sure that pitbulls are the number one breed for human attacks. usually it was German Shepherds but have not heard lately. |

Quote from Healthy pet.com
A study performed by the American Veterinary Medical Association, the CDC, and the Humane Society of the United States, analyzed dog bite statistics from the last 20 years and found that the statistics don't show that any breeds are inherently more dangerous than others. The study showed that the most popular large breed dogs at any one time were consistently on the list of breeds that bit fatally. There were a high number of fatal bites from Doberman pinschers in the 1970s, for example, because Dobermans were very popular at that time and there were more Dobermans around, and because Dobermans'size makes their bites more dangerous. The number of fatal bites from pit bulls rose in the 1980s for the same reason, and the number of bites from rottweilers in the 1990s. The study also noted that there are no reliable statistics for nonfatal dog bites, so there is no way to know how often smaller breeds are biting. |

I think those involved in dog fighting are the lowest form of humans that exist.
I have read that fighting dogs, if found to be human agressive, are killed immediately because they need to be grabbed and pulled out of the fight without the human being hurt. However I also know that many human bites are the result of somebody trying to break up a dog fight so the man in Maui is VERY fortunate that the dog which attacked his dog was not human agressive. and he could grab him and drag him away. From this prospective the story had a good ending. Once again I feel horrible that the little dog was injured and am happy he survived. |

I remember reading some years ago that owners of Pitbulls would be required to notify the insurance companies that insure their home, and that landlords of Pitbull owners would have to carry extra insurance. Did the legislature puss-out on this issue, anyone know anything about this? I know my friend has to pay extra each month because he owns Pittbulls.

Well, Westside Lolo, you're simply not the average dog owner; you KNOW how to handle your dogs, you know how to keep them and others safe.
I see so many people violating the beach and leash law that I didn't even realize there was one. Backyard breeders ARE a huge problem for most ANY breed. Rescue groups are the best since they rescue and train abandoned dogs. That's where I got my dog and she's great. I wrote my ealier post because of the many folks out there who just can't handle Pit Bulls. If every PB owner was like you, Westside Lolo, we'd have no need for restrictions or bans!
