A dog biting another dog makes the news........so what! How many dog biting people go unreported?! More importantly, why isn't the fine stronger than it is now? It' all too common a claim when dog owners say their animals are "harmless", would "never hurt anyone", or they're "good with children". The latter was stated by the owners of the dog that mauled my son!!!!

Lots of Hawaiian heirloom jewelry, tattoos, cap turned around backwards, a "lifted" truck with a big engine and big wheels......and a PITBULL in the back. Don't the hillbillies of Appalachia do the same thing? JMiguel

What is it with these people who own pit bulls but don't have the facilities to keep them locked in? They need to be responsible for their dogs. If the dog bites someone, the owner should be charged with assault.

I've seen you mention Appalachia in demeaning ways several times in your posts.

Hopefully for the last time (but I doubt it) - it is the owner, not the animal.

My Chihuahua was killed by a neighbor's Pitbull that was running loose and the police and humane society did nothing. Five years before that my wife was attacked and mauled by a Pitbull and nothing was done. She wears the scars today. In both cases, the response I got was, "The owner is on welfare, what ya gonna do?"

I keep reading about pit bulls attacking and sometimes killing small dogs. This is the second story I've read this year about large loose dogs invading a home and attacking the small dog in that home. I really think the fine should be huge for allowing a big dog to run loose and, if that dog runs loose again, it should be taken away from the owner. If it harms another person or animal it should be put down.

No buts and ifs about it. Sadistic owner, sadistic dog.

jmiguel---what is your point?
the reason why pit bulls are always in the news is because low life owners have easy access to owning the breed and don't know how to take care of them. low life so called breeders offer them for sale at low prices and therefore that is what attracts low life owners to buy one. i have a 75 pound pit bull who looks very intimidating but is a very friendly dog because of the way we raised him, interacting & socializing him with other people & other animals. He loves kids & other people & will lay on his back with his feet up as a way of asking a person to rub his belly. owners need to be more responsible for their pit bulls, they require special handling.

Miguel: I have Hawaiian jewelry, two pitbulls and an escalade truck with bigger tires so I am now a hillbilly. My dogs ride inside, never in the back. Mahalo for the clarification.
Actually I do not walk my dogs as never know what monster dog is roaming around. Fortunately I have a large walled in yard. BUT I know of an incident where a Welch Corgi mauled a small child and pomeranean killed a baby in LA.
Responsible owners hate to see any dog injured because of the heartache of the owners and the harm it does to our breed. We ask: Punish the deed not the breed.

A lot of people get pitbulls for the "image". Nothing is wrong with that - to each his own. The problem comes about when you can't control your damn dog. If that was my house, that pitbull would end up having a kitchen knife through his neck.

Actually I have to keep my dogs inside when I am gone as a friend heard some people talking, planning to steal them, they are super friendly so that may not be too hard.
At one time I had a very dangerous dog, a large white chow. Did not know this breed's rep when I got him but kept him behind a door and two fences. I knew his "rules" so we got along ok.

the owners of the dog are to blame...i actually have a pitbull and a dachshund and they get along great along with my wife's taco terrier...if you raise a pitbull to be killer thats how hes gonna be but mine is the most gentle dog out of my bunch...

I have always thought that there should be a law that say that if you are the victim of a dog bite, you can demand that the dog be put down. I think that might help control loose dogs. If we could only get keep the Legislators away from Chicago concerts and free flights to the PI, maybe they can attedn to this next year.

If it happened in my house or on my property, I would have probably shot it dead. If a pitbull got on your property and you feared for your safety (or that of your family), it would be justifiable self-defense.
If damages occurred and even if the owners have little assets, I'd still sue the heck out of them and garnish anything they get just out of principle. It's a case you can't lose but will have to spend thousands on. In turn they will be forced to spend thousands in hiring an attorney and maybe force them into a bankruptcy. Yes, it costs money but I would do it to teach a lesson.
When I take walks with my family, I always carry pepper spray and a good knife just in case.
I think pitbull owners get the breed for home protection or a show of strength because of it's reputation. Otherwise, what's wrong with a golden retriever or labrador?

Is it a status thing among locals to own a pitbull? Does it highten their self-esteem? I notice almost every owner of those gigantic "lifted" trucks is a little tiny guy who almost needs a ladder to climb down out of the cab. I guess if people have low-esteem it's better to own a "lifted" truck or a pitbull to make them feel better instead of taking crystal meth. On the mainland now the new status symbol is getting your kid into a top-tier college. The $40,000 lifted trucks I've seen lately are too nice to even put your pitbulls in...not to mention taking them off-road. I guess the trucks are just to impress everyone about how much discretionary cash you have? What will these people do when gas goes up to $5.00 a gallon...keep the truck or the pitbull? BTW 80% OF ALL DOE PUBLIC SCHOOL STUDENTS DON'T READ AT GRADE LEVEL.(THAT MEANS THAT MANY OF THE ADULTS IN HAWAI'I ARE FUNCTIONALLY ILLITERATE.) Get rid of the Hawaiian jewelry, the lifted truck and the pitbulls and start reading aloud to your children and engaging them in conversation...and conveying some world knowledge and vocabulary to them. Yes...the weapon of choice for home protection etc. is the 12 gauge shotgun. Everybody understands a 12 gauge...even a pitbull. JMiguel

I use Appalachia to indicate that 80% of the public school students in the state do not read at grade level. Hawai'i is 49th and 50th in the nation in math and reading tests. Therefore Hawai'i is the new Appalachia.(I guess to be more specific we are the new Mississippi, Louisiana and Kentucky). No wonder we have people riding around with pitbulls in the back of their trucks. If you are functionally illiterate...you need something to heighten your self-esteem. The real problem is that middleclass kids enter school with four times the world knowledge and vocabulary of kids who live below the poverty line. These kids struggle in school, drop out, begin committing crimes and then are sent to prison.(When was the last time you visited one of our prisons?) JMiguel ==========
NAH QUOTED: NAAAH, the hillbillies don't have Hawaiian heirloom jewelry. What do you have against Appalachia anyway? I've seen you mention Appalachia in demeaning ways several times in your posts.
