who="alice"]Yes, I fear the Big island may just be finished as a viable tourist zone.

Oh puhleese Alice..are you retarded? The vog affects just one area of the huge Big Island. It has been doing so for more years then you have been alive. Please think before you make such stupid comments.

It would be helpful to know which crops are NOT damaged by the VOG. The farmers could look up the VOG-tolerance of a crop before deciding whether to risk it.
The current farmers are (inadvertently) developing the data ... a farmer with VOG-damaged crops is obviously in a prime VOG test area. Someone (at UH?) should track this and publish the findings so at least some knowledge could come out of this difficult situation.

We support the Big Island concerns. We depend on Big Island flowers for our peak seasons, Christmas, Valentine's Day and Mother's Day and bring in anthuriums on a weekly basis too.
Futhermore, I am a Kauai County Farm Bureau Member. Every year our Tropical Flowers and Foliage Association- Kauai Chapter gets flowers for our Kauai County Fair event from Mc Calls. They have excellent product and are concerned for them and may not be able to get this year.
We hope that DOA will support them.

TeriYaki, you have to forgive Alice since she has only been in Hawaii for a year and probably hasn't visited the Big Island yet. And she hasn't learned yet that you shouldn't talk about things you don't know anything about.

I don't know about you, but most of us down here have insurance to cover hurricanes, storms and floods. I've paid my insurance for over 30 years without a claim, but if we do have a storm I'm covered as are most people down here. I don't believe there is VOG insurance is there??? As for the Rita and Katrina people, down here in Houston we took in over 300,000 of them, gave them homes, schooling, food and jobs all of which was paid from from out taxes and some FEMA Funds! WHAT DID YOU DO FOR THEM????? Not a damn thing I bet!
