Trojans Make B-Ball Semi-Finals

There are 2 comments on the story from Mar 3, 2008, titled Trojans Make B-Ball Semi-Finals. In it, reports that:

Fifth seeded Ka` u kane brought down number four seed HPA during the first round of the BIIF Div. II playoffs in a nail-biting game held in February. Tied at 53 and with nine seconds on the clock, Robert Peralta drove to the basket, but as fouled. With the tension high, Peralta missed both free throws, but Rolland Alcoran gained the possession of the rebound. Coach Todd Yanagi strategically called a timeout and put into motion an inbounds play. The ball passed to 6'2" senior Skyler Torres who "did a turn around jumper - a six to eight foot jump shot" scoring the winning shot with just two seconds to go, reported Yanagi.
"It was a hard fought game between both teams."

Ka`u went on to play first seed St. Joseph's, losing the game 59-41. Citing poorly placed shots during the second and third quarter as the main problem, Yanagi said "it was hard to catch up that."

Leading up to the playoffs, the Trojans were victorious over Parker in their last season game. They triumphed in Parker's own gym with 66 points to Parker's 56. Torres was the high scorer with 20 points, with fellow senior Blaine Oliveira following with twelve.

The 4th-seeded Trojan varsity wahine, also made it to the BIIF semis, trouncing 5th seeded Parker. The Trojans trailed behind by a few points most of the game until the fourth quarter when Coach Mark Pocock decided to shut down Parker’s lead scorer using a box and one play.

The Trojans came back to win the game 43-38. High scorers were Amber Pocock (13 pts), Pua Kailiawa (12), and Megan Javar (7). Kailiawa and Karen Estabilio each had nine rebounds and Pocock had eight.

The team went on to face first-seed Kamehameha, also last year's Div. II State Champions. Although they lost, Pocock said it was a great experience for the team. Pocock said that reaching this stage of the playoffs was the farthest that the Trojan wahine basketball team had gotten in "anybody's recent memory."
