So I guess if a doctor is in a serious wreck or has a stroke, for instance, they are still responsible for making sure you are taken care of. I forgot that doctors aren't supposed to ever have health issues, even emergencies. When Dr Smith gets better, you be sure and chastise him for getting sick and not clearing his time off with you first.

He owes all of you nothing. He only owes it to himself to be happy and take care of his family. Was it abrupt? Maybe. Was it in his best interst? Probably. Why does everyone think doctors should behave differently than a car mechanic that ups and closes his business? Or a chef that decides to close his restaurant? Get over yourselves and find a new doctor. If you have insurance, there are plenty of doctors taking new patients. If you don't, then quit being a sieve on the system and make something of yourself. I have no knowledge of why he has done this, but with all the crap doctors and health care providers are dealing with these days, I don't blame him. Anybody wander why there is a shortage of physicians?
You have no idea of what you are talking about and are you completely uneducated on the OATH Dr. take to care for their patients???? If you are comparing him to a mechanic you are completely uneducated of Dr./patient relationship. There is no excuse for up and leaving patients that have spent 10+ years in the office, and how in the world is another Dr. supposed to just simply pick up where he left off THEY CAN NOT!!!!! PATIENTS that need daily, weekly, monthly care go there and have for years. What is a patient to do that is out of heart meds, or any regular maintenance medís due to an illness, disease, whatever. You must not have had any real life hardships in your life and GOD bless you that you never have to go through what hundreds are dealing with now. Pray he is well and patients too. This whole manner of leaving was unethical and shocking because of the type of character he carried. If there is nothing intelligent to say it is best to say NOTHING!! GOD BLESS
pray he is ok

This situation hard to understand. He was a great Dr. and I pray he is well. it was not meant to say he was unethical for leaveing he has always been a great Dr., he needed to for some reason his choice, some notice or somethig would hve been good, we loved him and pray that he is well and for the office too. we must leave this be and move on for everyone's well being his and ours. GOD Bless him and patients in finding what everyone needs.

to disgusted - I think the question is where do you get off????? first off, you don't know everyone's situations. there are those of us who are just as sick if not worse than you. now its time for refills & Telle won't do it. Its almost impossible to get in with someone immediately-especially as a new patient without records b/c his office is in an uproar. i understand personal issues but he was our caregiver & had a responsibility as such. He did owe us to make sure that if he wasn't going to be there, there would be someone to take care of us until we found another doctor. That is part of patient/doctor trust. I haven't seen anyone "bad-mouthing" him & those that are stating what they heard, mostly heard it from the office or were led to believe same by the office b/c that is what they said to both my husband & myself. If he doesn't want people thinking badly of him, he should get that straightened out with Fam Med. He was seen a couple weeks ago & he never said a word about this. if he's been praying on it for a while, he could have said, look i've got some issues, not saying its happening, but you may want to think about looking for someone else. HE did know EVERYTHING about me & my family. I don't want to know his personal business but i also don't expect to be lied to by him (saying Telle would take care of us) and by his office. Yes, he will be missed & we cared deeply for him, but at this point, what am i to think. I sincerely pray only the best for him & pray that he is not sick himself & that if he is, his doctor does not do this to him. Yes, up until this point, i thought he was a wonderful, caring doctor. However that does not change the fact that this was all handled inappropriately, unprofessionally, and with no concern for the safety or well-being of the patients...be it by him or Dr. Telle. I am disgusted that he could be sick but at this point i am more disgusted by the lack of care & lack of concern & passion that my sick family members were given! I just have to have faith that God will see us through this & take care of us!
You are mistaken. Dr. Telle IS doing refills and has said she will continue to do so for at LEAST 30 days until the patients can find new physicians.
You're right, I do not know everyone's situation nor would I want to. My medical care stems from more than simply requiring refills and due to my extensive history, it is going to be HARD to start over again. 9 years worth of care for serious conditions. Two of which were life threatening. If you have cancer too, then I am sorry that you are suffering but it is my understanding that they have WONDERFUL oncologists here in Paducah.
I am quite defensive because people are putting their own issues above what MIGHT be his. It is HIS life. The oath a physician takes is ..first do no harm. They vow to treat their patients to the best of their ability. Which he has done. When faced with situations he felt he could not treat, he was VERY quick to refer to specialists. But he is having his own crisis of whatever sort now and we have to respect that HE HAS A LIFE TOO and it is just as important as ours - and his problems are as important as yours or mine. No where in their oath does it say "You have to be your patient's physician forever."
He explained his actions the best way he could. Telle will treat his patients for a month. Ample time to find a new doc. If refills are needed, she will do that as well.
Good luck in your quest and please pray that this man does well, no matter what life has in store for him. He has a family to look out for, too.
With all due respect

I find it very impressive that Dr. Telle is even "considering" to care for his patients for a 30 day period, on top of the other patients she currently sees. I have seen many doctors leave their practices, some in an abrupt manner, and not be able to at least make an attempt at coming up with a safety net like this. Even if Telle doesn't get to accept this huge load, it seems as if there was a decent attempt in doing so.

I also have recently changed doctors, and went with Dr. Parrish, and had no issues getting in and seeing him before any medical records were transferred. Yes, of course his office requested the records, but they didn't just make me hang out in the rain, so to speak, until he would see me. I am not advertising for him, by no means, but he is a very kind and caring physician. I am only sharing his name with this forum in attempt to enlighten those that are afraid of having to have their records settled before they will be able to be seen. I also don't know if his policy is still this way, but it was just a few months back.

In realizing how hard it is to come by a good doctor that truly shows concern and compassion, along with providing good care, I am sorry to see so many people having to go through this. I do not know this doctor but seeing what so many have said I can see that he meant a lot to his patients, or this forum wouldn't be here in the first place. With that said, I feel this man deserves a little more respect than has been shown, however I understand most of these posts were made in anger, confusion, and sadness (or someone was bored and wanted to provoke the weak, like Paducah's topix is notorious for). Which is why I am not going to judge you or tell you how you should feel, because that is ultimately not anyone's job but their own.

If you let it, your imagination can go wild with this mystery. Yes the letter was typed on the 16th, and most of you said you received it on Monday. I completely see the point that enough time had lapsed before it was mailed, that someone could have made prior notification of his decision. However, as in anything, with not knowing the entire story it is impossible to accurately pass judgement. Even if you do have all of the facts, judging is immoral anyway. Hypothetically speaking, he could have been given notice of some horrible situation that was affecting or could soon affect someone in his family, and he might not have been sure on the 16th which way it was going to pan out. To be on the safe side he could have gone ahead and typed the letter, so when he did receive the news, the letters would be ready to send. Then last Friday rolled around, his fears were confirmed and he had to leave immediately. For him to be able to bail so quickly, his patients had to have already been heavily considered. Lastly, that whole scenario was only hypothetical, and only an attempt to maybe cut this man a little slack, and only if it is deserved.

For those that are suffering because of this, I hope my words were helpful one way or another. Since I am not a part of this, I tried to be as objective as possible, as well as respectful of others feelings. For the record I am glad to see people on Paducah's Topix have some intelligent conversation for once!!!:) Good luck to those that are seeking new healthcare, I hope you find the care you deserve! My prayers are with you.

If ANY of his patients were prescribed medications that they can no longer get refilled because he left and the other Dr won't take over, they can cause a patient to go thru horrible agonizing withdrawals on certain medications. So, he has in an indirect way caused some of his patients harm. I would seek advice from an attorney if any of you are in a circumtance of having to stop taking medications that may cause ill effects. If his partner agreed to see his patients in has absence, then sounds like to me you could have a lawsuit on your hands. It's hard for some patients to start all over with another physician and todays physicians most dont give a crap about you, all they want is your money. They lack compassion for sure, so it's going to be hard on some of the patients.

Wow, Dr. Smith has been our family doctor for over 10+ years. He has literally saved my life 3 different times. I respect him as a person and a physician. I am mostly upset at Family Medicine Associates. We received the letter on Saturday and I called on Monday to make an appointment with Dr. Telle, but to no avail. A family member is on medicine that they can not do without and no refills. In good conscience, Family Medicine Ass. should at least provide us a list of physicians that are accepting new patients. Does anyone know whether Natalie is still working there. She is a wonderful compassionate nurse. We'll keep Dr. Smith and his family in our prayers.

Dr. David Smith is a great man, if any of you people have gone to him in the past you should already know this. I don't know what is going on with Dr. Smith but I do know that he is a great doctor and a better person.
