you're welcome. I've also read a lot on here about getting a different job. I'm also going to school I'm waiting tables to put myself through coleage. So yes waiting should be a temporary position at best.

Good for you!!! It is hard enough to go to college without having to work. But, to go to college and having to work to put yourself through it, is extremely difficult. It's comparable to having two jobs!!! But, in the end, it will be so worth it!!!! Kudos to you!!! Good luck and best wishes!!!

You are right, times are tough. But, I don't feel that you should stay at home or go through the drive thru if aren't financially able to pay a 20-40% tip. Are you suggesting that all she receives in tips is $12.00 for an eight hour shift? So, in addition to the $2.13/hour she receives, she gets an additional $12.00. If she works eight hours a day and receives $12.00, then she makes $39.00 for an eight hour shift. Now, by law, the manager is supposed to compensate for that and provide her with a minimum wage. Why doesn't she try to go to work at Wal-Mart where they WILL work around her schedule and she WILL receive more than minimum wage. With all due respect to you and your daughter, something is keeping your daughter there besides her meagerly salary. I firmly believe that tips are better than servers say they are and customers are not as rude as servers claim. Otherwise, they would not be there.
It's great that you can leave a minimum of 30-40%!!! Most people can't. And let's face it, some servers do not provide the level of service that merits such a tip. That's what it's all about-rewarding good service, not just rewarding subpar or nonexistent service.
If we did eat out or go through the drive thru, your daughter would not have a job because the vast majority of people cannot consistenly leave the amount of tip that YOU ALL FEEL WE MUST LEAVE!!!
I'm not saying you must. But in my experience if you want your server to be good to you first be good to them by being kind and not be inconsiderate to them. Most complaints a server gets are regarding their food( too cold, not enough, too tough etc) not the servers fault. Ask for a manager to deal with that , don't take it out on the server . I have had really bad service before by servers with a bad attitude . I will still tip him or her, not a 30% but the customary 15. And I try to be thoughtful, I don't know what is going on in their life. I know we aren't suppose to take our personal lives to work but I have a friend whose mother had just passed away and she had to work , no one would cover her shift , she had a bad night, I'm sure her mind was very distracted. And yes there are managers who don't give a crap about your life! In the end I think they should make at least minimum wage and be allowed to keep their tips which reflect how well they do! Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

This is easy. If your service sucks, so will your tip. You are not ENTITLED to a tip, it must be earned.

Shitty tips are what put us servers in shitty moods. Thankfully I work in private dining in which everything is automatically gratuitized at 19%. 15% has not been customary in over 10 years just so you know.

Yes some people are cheap but when the service sucks or ur rude dont expect a good tip. Ive been known to leave a $20 tip and even no tip at all. What i hate is when u have a party over 8 people and the tips included and the server is a prick and doesnt deserve it. So probably the ones on here sayn no one tips good are the ones that dont deserve it. Git a new job or be nice and work for it.

19% your smokin bat sh!t .. 10% has been customary for as long as I can remember anything over 10% will reflect your service. For instance if my drink becomes empty I start subtracting, or if my order is wrong I will subtract more. Stop blaming the cooks for you incompetence when you do not check my meal before you bring it to my table. You took the order so you are responsible. Your tip will reflect your service and your attitude. You are not entitled to any tip even if it is automatically added to a ticket, it can be removed and if it is me and your service sucks it will be removed. You determine your tip !!!!!

A loogie in your cherry coke. Nice. Sadly, you don't see that you've just confirmed the worst possible belief about those in the service industry. Will work for $2 .00 an hour by choice, feel entitled to more and will repay those who don't meet your personal expectations with a vile, nasty and harmful mucous wad. I suspect your personal integrity, values and goals will keep you at a $2.00 pay rate for many, many years. Drinking poison to hurt others is pretty stupid; your attitude, in the long run, only hurts you.

Doesn't hurt me at all.... But that indeed is the REALITY!!

I'm glad you brought that up!!! The server SHOULD double check the order prior to bringing it out-since they took the order. In business isn't that called, Quality Control.
You are right, THEY DETERMINE THEIR TIP!!!!

AMEN!!!!!! Perhaps this is why he is no longer in the food service business. His immature and ungrateful attitude only merited subpar or no tip. But, to hear him talk, it is the customer who needs to learn a little etiquette. But, where was the need for him to learn a little etiquette? I guess for him, it's only a one-way street. Perhaps he is a bit narcissistic. You challenge him or disagree with him, and he will relentlessly target you. Sounds like you've gotten on his bad side. Look out, it's going to be a bumpy ride for you.

I agree, if you want to be treated kindly or respectfully, you have to reciprocate-no argument there. While I agree that food rareness/overdoneness of a steak is out of the control of a server. However, if the server would check in the kitchen several times to see if their orders are ready to go out to the table, perhaps the customer would not be served cold food.
I would NEVER tip a server with a bad attitude. If I didn't provoke it or wasn't at the root of the problem, then I should not compensate the server for having bad customers or for having a bad day. His/her problem not mine.
Leave your problems at home, leave them at the table who provoked you, or whatever. BUT DON'T TAKE THEM OUT ON ME in the form of a bad attitude. Because I will take your bad attitude out on you in the form of a bad tip.
Oh, now come on. A restaurant would not let her off because of a death in the family-especially a mother?!!! They HAVE to let you off for bereavement. Obviously they won't let you take two weeks off or anything like that. You are usually given about four days for bereavement. So, how long after she passed away are you talking about?
