Because it is intentionally untrue ( a deliberate lie). No company is going to fall for that. You would have to be really unintelligent to think we could call the county the city, and then big, multimillion dollar corporations will just say " look, Paducah just tripled in size, let's move there". And the people making that argument know this. If they are that stupid, let's just change the signs that lead to Paducah to say, population 100,000.
I was thinking the same thing. Very good argument. It may help in the distant future, but it could very well dissuade companies at present times. Like you said, it would show them how dishonest and corrupt the local government is at this time and potentially drive others away.

A agree with BarbaricFarthammer. Any company with a lick of sense is going to know that a merger wouldn't change their bottom line. It would be the same number of people we always had, living where they always had, and a new local government trying to blow smoke up their asses. Yes, Paducah would get a FINE repuation for trying to TRICK businesses into coming here.
That was actually Ronnie's argument though I do agree with him.

Been seeing a lot of the " no" signs in Paducah. It is not just the selfish county residents that are against it. Anybody with any experience dealing with the city goverment knows it is out of control. It needs to go ahead and hit rock bottom so it can admit it has a problem and the healing can begin. Just like you don't give money to a addict, you don't give money to city goverment.

Stupid to vote No. Time for a Change, A different way. If it doesn't work you can all ways go back. But so far every city that has Merge didn't want to go Back.

If you could give one study or report to back up your claims, it might be more believable than constantly telling people they are stupid for their beliefs, too mired in the way things are now, etc. Oh, that's right, you can't. There is not one shred of evidence that supports economic prosperity follows mergers. For the most part, those areas that have had economic improvement during this down economy had a higher population density to begin with (something like 5 times higher than a merged Metro area here would have.) And, just like taxes never going down, or a government ending a fee that it has started; no one really buys that "you can always go back" crap. Governments, especially the local ones are intrinsically corrupt.

I'm just curious...if people do vote yes and this passes, then is there going to be a new election held for city government? It doesn't seem fair for the county to be merged but then have to wait until the next election cycle before they can have a say in who is governing them.

Yep, I just looked at the wrong name.

Also, is it safe to assume that if the merger passes that the city will now force us countians to pay their trash collection fee? Isn't that mandatory in the big city of Paducah? Or is that only for businesses? Won't the cost of trash collection go even HIGHER, because of county residences being generally spaced so much farther apart? Gee, I wonder if the pro-merger folks mentioned that in their little chats about how much better off we all would be with the merger.

The pro-merger agenda hides behind this "store front" of "we will bring more businesses to Paducah!" I think we've already well established that businesses aren't stupid enough to look at just the population on our "Welcome to Paducah" sign. They look at how densely the entire area is populated and what other businesses are in neighboring cities, to determine whether the "local" and tourist populations are enough to turn the minimum profit they will accept. And guess what? They even have people who went to college to learn how to figure this out! But the pro-merger folks, most of whom have NO idea what they're talking about, really don't even CARE that they don't know what they're talking about. They just want someone to bail them out of the financial mess they've made for themselves and instead of learning to live within a budget, they want to find a way to swindle their county neighbors.

Oh, and to the person who said something to the effect that if we cared about our community... PADUCAH IS NOT MY COMMUNITY. I do not live there. I live in McCracken County. Specifically West Paducah. THAT is my community, that is where I take my business wherever possible, THAT is the community I care about, just as the other countians care about THEIR communities. I don't wish any harm to the city of Paducah, but don't drag us kicking and screaming into your mess. We KNOW how WELL your city government manages things!
