Teen under influence of Mushrooms, Marijuana and Alcohol who kicked in door of another home in another neighborhood thinking he was at his parents home where he lived, and was fatally wounded with 1 shot, at approximately 02:00AM. Homeowner, his wife, 2 year old and three year old were also in the home at the time. Homeowner repeatedly asked Caleb Barnett to leave, and Mr. Barnett kept calling homeowner "DAD", thinking he was at his own home, and kicked the door in. The homeowner asked Caleb multiple times to step back out of his foyer and leave, and Caleb kept coming towards the homeowner and was shot. KRS 503.080 Protection of Property (Castle Doctrine) (1) The use of physical force by a defendant upon another person is justifiable when the defendant believes that such force is immediately necessary to prevent: (a) The commission of criminal trespass, robbery, burglary, or other felony involving the use of force,... (2) The use of deadly physical force by a defendant upon another person is justifiable under subsection (1) only when the defendant believes that the person against whom such force is used is: (b) Committing or attempting to commit a burglary, robbery, or other felony involving the use of force, or under those circumstances permitted pursuant to KRS 503.055, of such dwelling; or (c) Committing or attempting to commit arson of a dwelling or other building in his possession. (3) A person does not have a duty to retreat if the person is in a place where he or she has a right to be.

!!!!!More like handguns and guns in general suck!!!!! The guy should have realized something was wrong when the kid kept calling him Dad. Dont ya think?? Yeah, I would have protected myself...but, not with a handgun or any gun. Probably a ball bat or a stick or just a nice judo trip and then sat on him until the cops arrived. Sounds like a verry jumpy and scared guy to have pulled a handgun so fast. Must not have been a very big man to have not taken a drunk and or drug impaired person down. Or maybe even, I dunno..... tried to talk or rationalize with him.... nah.... I'll just pull my gun and shoot him. Hope the guy can live with himself that shot that kid. Kinda mindless and a major waste of a young life. ~peace~

It took 4 police officers to take this kid down. This is after being shot!! the drugs had an unfortunate effect on this boy.But this homeowner was protecting his family.

Caleb was not the perfectly behaved young man that his friends would lead you to believe. The McKinney's had EVERY right to defend themselves and their property, and exercised great restraint in doing so. Rather than 1 bullet to the arm, any intruder would have gotten more than that many bullets by busting into my home and refusing to leave. The Barnetts buried Caleb by the road in the cemetary at the end of the McKinney's drive. And now there is a fund raiser for the Barnett family....What the hell is that all about? To glorify his drug addiction and terrorism of an innocent family? How will the McKinney family - the REAL victims - be compensated for the anguish this has caused for them?

Ummm....have you EVER seen anyone taken down by ONE police officer????? I think NOT. What a laugh!!! The police cant do much without backup, and yes I am sure he was stronger than usual......but, how hard is it to stop and listen??!!?? The kid was calling this mckinney guy DAD for Gods sake. Hello!!!???? Shouldnt this have set off a few bells in Gunman mckinneys tiny little brain??????? C'mon people THINK, this is not tv!!! You mustnt have any kneejerk reactions to something like this. The kid was afterall UNARMED!!!!!!!!!U N A R M E D!!!!!!!! Also, I only have heard this, so it may be true or not. I heard that the kid lived only 2 or 3 houses down from gun totin' mckinney. If this is true, maybe shouldnt the trigger happy guy have known his own neighbor???? Nice to know ya neighbor.... As for you madd1, you are a big part of this problem. You would shoot in an instant wouldnt you??? Tell me why you think you are on tv or the old west????? Are you not man enough or big enough to stand up against an UNARMED intruder????? AN UNARMED TEEN!!!!!! Trigger happy people, alcohol and drugs were the cause of much anguish and pain, especially in this case. Sad for all involved.

The McKinney's were in THEIR home, minding their own business. Barnett was not shot until: 1. He had kicked in 2 doors 2. Was warned they had a gun 3. Was asked repeatedly to leave And, by all accounts, he did not call McKinney "dad" until during the scuffle that ensued AFTER the shot - and that is the reason McKinney did not shoot anymore. And, Barnett lived in another subdivision, and the McKinney's did not recognize him. Manson, Daumer, Bundy - they all had neighbors too. The McKinney's are heros. Let this incident be a warning to Caleb's druggie friends. Kick in just 1 door at my house at 2 a.m., you'll meet my gun.....and it will be a shot that WILL stop you, immediately. Especially if I don't know you.

If guns are so bad, then why does his mom work at Shooters Supply, selling guns? Shame on those that are participating in the fund raiser.

"Dad" is the new code word. Just bust up into someones house and call them "Dad" so they won't shoot!

Maybe his theiving friends could sell the things they have stolen to help pay for the funeral instead of insulting homeowners in the community with a public fund raiser. Just a thought.

Wow. The Barnetts did not "bury Caleb by the road in the cemetary at the end of the McKinney's drive". He was laid in his final resting place nearest to his family, at the church he attended. The cemetary is not visible from the McKinney's home, much less their "drive". To answer your questions, the 'Caleb Barnett Memorial Fund' was established by the loved ones of the Barnetts to allow friends and family the opportunity to support them in their time of grief, to be utilized for unexpected expenses (funeral, medical, leave from work, etc.). Life, and the expenses that come along with it, continue regardless of whether your world stops turning due to the death of your child. And the "hero" you speak of, Mr. McKinney...interesting how he established a fund in Caleb's name - the EXACT NAME of the previously establishd fund - without the permission of his parents. Interesting how this "hero" has used this tragedy to tirelessly promote his business. There are a lot of facts that DON'T ADD UP. Take your adoring eyes off of your "hero" for a moment and look at the facts instead. Excessive force was definitely used. Caleb was 140 pounds. Mr. McKinney is well over 300 pounds and 6'4". He could have physically subdued Caleb until the authorities arrived. However, the could-have's and should-have's will not bring Caleb back. Assumptions and allegations made by individuals who describe trigger-happy homeowners as "heros" only serve to add insult to injury. Caleb's family lost their son, brother, and friend. Show some respect.

Some of the posts on here disgust me. I cannot believe people can be so ignorant. Mckinney had every right to protect his family and property, he tried to stop Caleb multiple times and warned him he had a gun. If someone kicked in my door in the middle of the night, I would react in the same way. We do not own a gun, but I would protect my family. Caleb's death was a tragedy and my heart goes out to both families involved. But, Caleb MADE A CHOICE, he CHOSE to go to a party, HE CHOSE to take the drugs he took, and HE CHOSE to get in a car and leave. He made those decisions himself and he suffered the consequenses, however fatal. Calling the homeowner trigger happy or whatever else so ridiculous, imagine yourself in that situation. Someone you don't know kicking your door in, it would be terrifying. I am sure that Caleb could not be reasoned with and shooting him didnt stop him. Every person has the right to do what he did. I feel for that family, knowing the shot intended to stop him, killed him. But, anyone else would have reacted the same way. I am not a gun owner, they scare me, but his reaction was completely normal. We dont blame the sober driver when a drunk driver hits them. When you make immature, irrational decisions, which most teens do, you suffer harsh consequences. Attacking the homeowner in this situation, is attacking our constitutional rights. ***When I was a teen, still living at home, my Dad worked out of town. We lived right on the highway, and late one night someone beat on our front door. My mom and I were terrified. We called my older brother to come over, we had phones ready to call 911, and my mom got my Dad's shotgun out. It ended up being a strange traveler with car trouble. But, I assure you we would have done the same thing, your FIGHT OR FLIGHT Response kicks in, its human nature.

As I said before!!! I would have taken the boy to the ground and probably sat on him until the cops arrived. After all I am about the same height and a little smaller in weight than triggerman mckinney is. But I beleive that I could have taken this kid down. And if he didnt have a weapon this would have made it that much easier. mckinney was and peobably is still verry triggerhappy. I NEVER said that I wouldnt use something on someone. A ballbat works fantatsic, especially the tee ball bats. They are perfectly sized to take a kneecap out.In my op[inion, mckinney is a big ole WUSSY!!! Big man like him not being able to defend himself and his family aginst a young and 145lb BOY!!!! Just an excuse to act like he was in the movies. Like I said before, hope he can live with his murdering self!!! Nice touch that he used this as a springboard for his business. YES PEOPLE DEFEND YOURSELF AND WATEVER PROPERTY YOU HOLD VALUABLE, BUT, USE NO GUNS!!!! Like I said before a ball bat, a golf club, a rolling pin or even a broom stick......but using a gun on a 145lb BOY???!!! C'mon a little bit og overkill, dont'cha think??!! !!!!THIS IS LIFE...NOT A MOVIE OR A VIDEO GAME!!!! All could have been avoided with some reasoning and quelling triggerhappy's kneejerk reaction. 6'2" 250-275 9mm triggerhappy mckinney versus a drug and alcohol induced 18yr old 5'10" 145lb non armed BOY!!!!!

For those of you that want to call McKinney "triggerman" and other unwarranted names, let's level the field here and point out some things about Caleb: 1. Druggie 2. Terrorist 3. Theif Any law enforcement official will tell you that when a person (even smaller than 140lbs) is under the influence of certain substances - magic mushrooms being one of them - that it takes a MINIMUM of 4 officers to subdue that person. McKinney was alone in having to deal with a home invading druggie, and he and his family had just been awaken from sleep. McKinney did not just offer any of his personal info. The media went looking for it, and the friends and family of Caleb were bad mouthing McKinney and his business. Kudos to McKinney for acknowledging who he is and what he does. McKinney is a hero, and the druggies need to remember this event. I will definately support his business every chance I get. It is really sickening to read that so many people think that Caleb did not deserve what he got.

MOTHEROF2, Let me say first, that while I completely agree with some of your comments, the man that shot the young kid will be forever punished without you making him sound like he is profiting from this publicity! Shame on you!! This tradgedy is NOT a matter of blame! Everyone involved is forever damaged from this childs drug use!! Might I add that the man that shot this teen did what he had to do to protect his family and while I would hate for this to be my child, I know that I have preached on the subject of drug use to my daughter from the time she was in middle school until she was fully grown so no one is truly to blame in this situation!! SHAME ON YOU PEOPLE!!!!

Some people don't seem to comprehend that he didn't call the homeowner "dad" until after he had violently broken down two doors, was warned, kept coming in, and was shot. At the point of being shot, any sane person in the homeowners shoes would conclude that this guy has the gravest of intentions. His actions up to that point were consistent with someone who would mean to cause the family harm, not somebody who was harmless and confused.
