I have read it is the instant gratification they get from video games. Releases serotonin and dopamine into their system, just what their brains are craving. I hope you weren't being sarcastic because if you have not lived with a child with ADD/ADHD, you have no idea the hell they go through.
AMEN, My son is everywhere. I have to call his name so many times a day, it gets sooooo old! We always have to watch him because of his risk taken ways. He is all over the place & LOUD!!! He walks to the beat of his own drum but I love him to death, & wouldn't change him a bit.

I agree with mommyx3...If you are in the Paducah, KY area, a good Doc. to go to is Dr. Cecil in Paducah. He is an older doctor who specializes in Add/Adhd and has done more research and clinical studies on Vyvanse in the area. The side affects are minimal compared to the other meds out there.
MY sons on vyvance and goes to Dr. Cecil. We love him, he's great!

How is it that kids have ADD/ADHD, can't pay attention in school because of it, however they can stare at a screen for hours while playing XBox or PlayStation?
Because there is great amount of stimulation with video games. Alot of lights, motion, characters, etc. It awakens their mind, sight, critical thinking and motor skills. That's why.

No, the video games are awesome and they are figuring out how to get to do what they want all the while convincing you that it's theraputic. You will wake up and find this truth out when they are either grown or whipping your butt when they are in highschool or earlier. When this happens, remember that i told you this.

My son is Add/adhd we have tried several different meds and I hate the side effects of the ones we have tried..We have tried diets and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or the best meds with less side effects, I hate having to force feed my son..I hate that he has a hard time sleeping, I hate the zombie effect you sometimes gets the depression that comes with the meds..I really hate Add/adhd altogether but advice would be helpful to make it less stressful for my child and for us his parents?
People: As a mental health professional I can advise you to go see Dr. Cecil at Redicare like someone said before on this thread. I am ADHD myself and I HATE taking any medication. I wasn't diagnosed until my adult years and now take Aderall. I had the side effects for a while, but like with any other medication, it takes time for your body and mood to regulate.
As for the ignorant people who think that ADHD is not real, unless you have some empirical proof, then don't post anything. So you believe depression doesn't exist either? This is why so many people with mental health problems don't get treated because of the stigma. And as far as the spanking goes, did you know that it is considered a Fourth Degree Assault? Besides, physically punishing a child for something they can't control is like cussing God for a rainy day when you were hoping for a sunny one.

I can tell you a real good cure for this disorder. Bust that rear end and it will get him to focus real quick! Sometimes children need to understand what is required of them and what type of consequence is going to happen if they don't.
Perhaps if children were grounded from that video game they could focus more on reality. Perhaps a greater measure such as a good spanking and a few extra chores might make them focus on getting their hind end in gear and reading a required assingment or shutting that smart mouth the first time you told it to. I'm just sayin. You can't always reason with spoiled rotten. You can however, get a nice ssi check if you let it be spoiled rotten. Are you kids for sale? Really?

I have a son with ADHD and we do not recieve a check! Not all parents are looking to "sell" or "drug" their children. I can honestly say I have done it ALL. I fought giving him meds for several years. we saw counclers, Doctors, Psycologists and dieticians. I finally had to give in when he was 8.(the state was going to take him if I didn't) He is now 13 and he had been on the same dose we started on until recently. When he was 10 he told me the meds made him like himself better because it made him not feel like a bouncey ball on the loose. He takes Focalin XR we have had almost no weight lose. No trouble sleeping or severe mood swings. Just check and double check before you give meds to them some of the drugs they want to give them have some SERIOUS side effects.

very nicely said!! Thank you I feel the same way!! I know that all of us adhd/add momma's could use advice from other parents experiencing the same things...I am always up for suggestions on way to help my child learn and making it fun for the child all in the process..It has nothing to do with being spoiled as people has said..But making things like homework, bathtime and bedtime much easier and less dramatic for the child..Kudo's to us mom's who would rather look for ways to make things easier for our children than to physcially hit our child as suggested..

Why would anyone think a Mom would collect a "check" because a child has ADD/ADHD? It's not a disability. My child's intelligience is well above average and she is more well-behaved than most children. Children who have ADD/ADHD are not disabled. Some of you people really should at least educate yourself before you comment on a subject you clearly know nothing about. A child with poor eye-sight should not be deprived of their glasses, the same goes for children who need medication for any other medical condition. And to all you parents who denied your child treatment for a medical condition like ADHD, other than "spanking" them...good job raising a deviant, illegal drug-using criminal. Great parenting you lazy morons!

Personally, I think ADD/ADHD and ODD are way over diagnosed and the prescriptions are AMPHETAMINE. I was diagnosed with ADHD,boy was I off in my own little world when I was prescribed VYVANSE and Adderal (at different times). I was like a speed freak. I would take my meds early morning and then I would have to take a sleep aid just to go to sleep at night. Finally I realized I was speeding off the meds, so I stopped taking them. I became more determined to focus on my life and the things I was doing. What happened to kids just being kids (with the exception of a few. I guess because society/government has too much of an influence. I would suggest giving your kid a NON STIMULANT med.

Intuniv is a non stimulant drug!! Which is what my child is on..It has elimananated the use of a sleep aid..It also does not have that zombie effect that some of the simulant drugs have..My child now has a great appetite and is gaining some much needed weight..It works 24 hours and has completely changed my child for the better..

I agree that add/adhd meds are over precribed however for the true add/adhd patients meds are just about the only answer for proper treatment..

Intuniv has been the answer to my prayers..I would still like suggestions however not just for my add/adhd child but for all my children on helping them focus and making learning and homework fun for them..

I would not recommend anyone starting adderall. I have been taking it for 10 years and it helped at first but not anymore. Your body gets used to it after awhile and then most people increase the dosage because it not helping as much. It is extremely addictive. When I started taking it in college it helped me alot but the risk are not worth it.

The reason is because we like the short episodes of a game or television. Our minds flash as fast as the scenes of a movie. It is not easy to understand unless you have it, but try this multitasking physically and get 4 or 5 trains of thought going in your head at one time. This is what I deal with on a daily basis. Many people think I am amazing in how I can keep so much going but I feel like I am about to short circuit. The medicine althought I dont take it, does work miracles. It is good medicine, I just forget by and large to get the script filled and most commonly forget to go to my doctors appointment.
