My husband and one of my sons is a pilot/captain at ingram. They will give you a chance even if you don't have experience working on the river. My other son works in the office as a barge dispatcher at James Marine (just down the road from Ingram.
It's a good job to have (on the river) with good benefits. Just remember it's very hot work and hard work. It's cold in the winter too. If you go out there with the attitude of showing yourself to be a hard worker you will do fine. My husbands job of 16 years ended when he got on the river. He had worked at a plant and it closed. He went out at 38 yrs old and worked very, very hard. Hehas worked his way up to captain from deckhand in 12 years. My son has done the same and he had gotten an associates degree in criminal law. He went out on the river for Ingram and worked his way up into the wheelhouse in about 8 years. You can do it! Do whatever they tell you to do. Don't complain. Bug the heck out of em until they hire you! Good Luck!
help me get on the barge company please

Swamp, I just applied with Ingram today and saw on previous post that they consider online apps last.. Do you know if that's true? I'm a relief mate with Marquette transportation with almost 5 years experience looking for a good company with advancement. Thanks

Do you know what they start experienced deckhands out at? What about the programs to get in wheel house?

I believe experienced dh pay is 150ish a day. Id have to check for sure but i believe thats right. As for the wheelhouse, there's a steersman program but there are several in line. Dont be discouraged tho. Not everyone makes it, and many find that piloting just isnt for them. Generally you have to be a mate in order to get in the program.

Hey, if anybody could help me, it'd be really appreciated.

I live fairly close to Chicago, and have done alot of research and all I came up with is American Commercial Lines and Illinois Marine Towing, a subsidiary of Canal Barge, are those the only Barge businesses around Chicago?

Also, I applied to Illinois Marine Towing as a Deckhand, I pretty much know what to expect if I am offered the opportunity, but does anybody know what kind of company they are, I've seen alot of people on here give there thoughts whether this company is good or that one is bad, anybody know anything about Illinois Marine Towing?

I seen Consol was hiring for deckhands, I'm going to apply, can anyone tell me about the interview process, salary etc. I got out of the Navy a year ago, I have 6 years on the water. Also what kind of drug test cause I smoked pot moderately until about 2 weeks ago, so I can pass a urine test but not sure about hair.

Cut out the weed because it stays in your system for about 30 days after you last use it.If you can't get off the drugs, you won't last long on the river.Either the company will terminate you for use, even on your time off,or you will try using on the job and either kill yourself or someone who was looking out for himself stone sober.
INterviews are interviews. They try to verify your work experience, and why you left your last job.If you were a BM in the Navy, that's a big help, though you don't use as many knots.

Weed only stays in your system 36 hours to a week if not a regular user and smoke all the time

He said moderately used. Best bet would be wait at least 45 days and then try. You fail a test and any DOT governed job is out

Got a question @ swampdonkey I heard the won't consider anyone that's has worked for James marine no matter how much experienced they are... Why is this ? Isn't that discrimination ?
