What types of homeless services/programs do you think are missing from the Pensacola area? As a homeless person, what service do you need the most, other than housing and food?

One has to weigh the truly down and out homeless people that are a result of financial downturns and those who are bums, hobos, and beggars. Some can be helped get back on their feet by having a place to live and a job to save up money to work their way back home BUT there are those who want no authority or help from missions and the people trying to help them. THEY WANT LIQUOR,CIGARETTES,and the ability to do as they please when and where they want to. Those low lifes don't even need to be called "homeless" it's more like "worthless". I rest my case.

many years ago i had a pill problem and it resulted in me becoming homeless. one day i woke up in jail and it was like a smack in the face. i realized that day, that this is not where i wanted to spend my life and that this was not what i wanted from the only life i'm gonna get.

when i got out of jail, i got a job the same day. bathed in a creek and slept in a tent for almost a year. saved up enough money to get a place. that was almost ten years ago, now i am employed, a full time student, and about to get married.

my point is that "helping" the homeless is pointless...i know because i was once homeless and the homeless do not want help. the simple fact exists that when someone decides to change their life, they will do just that. period.

"thomas a" i agree 100%...the same goes for smoking or drugs. no one can help, when you decide that you want to quit, you will.

no one can help. unfortunately these are things that people must do themselves.

You, of all people, have no right or authority to call ANY human being trash.

some people believe that human lives all have the same value. other people believe that the doctors, teachers, engineers and scientists are more valuable than the drug addicts, leeches, thieves, gangbangers and child molestors.

sorry, but some people are human trash. i was once trash but i completely turned my life around.

answer honestly...would our planet, our society, the human race be better off without certain people?

You were NEVER trash. You may have been down in the gutter, been nearly beyond the pale of hope, seemingly completely out of options, but you proved that you weren't trash.

Not everyone makes it. That doesn't make them trash.

Now truly evil people, and they DO exist, are another story. Beyond any chance @ redemption, they become monsters. When we destroy them, then they're trash.

quentin, i'm afraid i must respectfully disagree although you do make a good point.

i was an opiate addict and a thief...a burden on society and although i never hurt anyone or did anything "evil" i do believe at that time, yes i was trash. i'm not anymore but a lot of people don't make it out and the key is self esteem.

were it not for that day in jail, that smack in the face, my self esteem would not have been strong enough for me to fight and climb out of that abyss. so i do believe that the homeless, the addicts and the other less fortunates deserve help...my point was just that if they don't want help in the first place, then you are wasting your time...and i believe that some people are indeed "evil" and quite literally beyond hope.

There are two correct answers. One is correct if you believe there is a God and the other is correct of you don't. I personally believe that we have value because of who created us and only he has the right to throw us away. Homelessness is a complicated problem and in most cases involves an addiction and a lack of hope. Sort of like someone trying to quit life but not going all the way. The key is to give them hope without enabling them. Even then only some will make it back into society. For the others there is hope on the other side and many find it.
