BOTH OF MY KIDS ARE OUT OF ZONED SCHOOLS. ONE IS BECAUSE WE MOVED AND THATS THE ONLY ELEMENTRY SCHOOL WE HAVE KNOWN AND ITS AN A SCHOOL AND THE TEACHERS ARE GREAT AND THEY CARE FOR THE KIDS EDUCATION AND ALSO SHE HAS ALOT OF FRIENDS. MY OTHER HAD TO BECASUE SHE IS IN HIGH SCHOOL AND THEY HAVE DIFFERENT VOCATIONAL PROGRAMS SO YOU CHOOSE YOUR FUTURE. HERE IN CLAY COUNTY YES, YOU CAN GO TO OUT OF ZONE SCHOOL BUT YOU HAVE TO FILL OUT A FORM, THEY THE BOARD APPROVES IT AND THEN YOU HAVE TO PROVIDE YOUR OWN TRANSPORTATION. THEY WILL NOT BUS THE KIDS OUT OF ZONE. IF WE CHOOSE TO GO OUT OF ZONE WE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR TAKING THEM AND PICKING THEM UP. THAT SHOULD BE FOR ALL COUNTIES.
yay for you being a parent. isn't that your obligation once you have kids? yes. go eat your spinach.

I would love to see the cost of busing children to magnet schools. I'll bet it is outrageous! Everyone needs to go to school in their own district. If you feel like the school in your neighborhood is not sufficient you should take that up with your neighbors and your school board rep.

If and only if another school has the space and you want your child to go there you should be responsible for transportation.

The only exception should be for special needs children of course. They would still be bused.

In most advanced countries it is the parents responsibility to get their kids to school, not the taxpayers. Just like in Europe.
First of all, what is your point? Apparently, you do not have children nor would you want or understand the responsibility of having children. Second, my children should be going to the school in our neighborhood. However, because of all of the current (and future) development in St. Johns County, my kids are being forced out of their zone next school year and bussed to a school 30 miles away so the "future" homeowners, which consists of a larger payscale group than I guess that in my area, can get first pick of their school. Not exactly what I anticipated when I started having my children and built my house 16 years ago!...and yes - I am pissed at this! My kids are honor students and are being punished for living in an established area - and I am a single parent and yes, I do work and do it alone - so no - transportation is not easy AT ALL for me not to mention any extracarricular activities at school, which my kids will be forced to refrain from.

I have two children out of zone in st. Johns county because their educsational needs cannot be met at our zoned school. This is true for gifted children as well as disabled children. They bus my kids to a failing school and my other child goes to our zoned school. Without out of zone busing how does a parent pick up children at different schools at the same time. If the local shool could provide for all the educational needs of all children that would be different but they don't.

Magnet schools are getting a bad rap. Did you know the the elementary magnet school for elementary kids in St. Johns county is at a failing school. Did you know that the gifted is placed in this failing school. The autistic programs are at this failing school. The handicapped kids go to this failing school. Kids who go there are not choosing to go to a nicer neighborhood school, they are leaving their A rated neighborhood school to go to a failing elementary because that is the only school that has clustered of like group of kids and the County must provid for each child's needs. The County should be required to bus my child to an out-of-zone school if the out-of zone-school is the only school to provide what that child needs whether it is for a gifted child or the other end of the bell shped curve.

Busing should be banned in this age of budget cuts. We have fat students let them walk or ride bikes, go back to neighborhood schools and let the parents of the students in the neighborhood help at the schools to make them better. Parental involvement is the answer. Ban school busing immediately. This would save about 30 million a year. This is the answer to the school budget problems. Raise the standards at the local school, or hold the parents of the students accountable.
