Not only is what you write true. At 300-500 an hour or more, you can burn a lot of money before you even ge to trial. Even in out of court settlements, it is not unusual for law firms to charge defendants over $100,000 just to get them to the point of settling out of court - as little as 200 man hours - 5 weeks of work - could result in a $100,000 bill.

Litigants know all this, and for small change settlements, know it is cheaper for defendants to settle early.
