Here's to you, Miami. Miami will now be referred to as the Miami Dignitarians. Your mascot is now a naked scholar with no manhood... unless that offends someone.

Are people really so stupid that they cannot realize the selection of a mascot is based on a competitive spirit, on a fierce imade, on something proud. How many schools call themselves kitty cats? Having a Native American as a competitive spirit is an honor, not something disgraceful.

The reason teams call them selves by Indian names is because they see them as great and brave and everything honorable so why would the Indians complain its a compliment.

Plain and simple idiots. My school did this back in the 90's. We were known as the "Hurons" with an Indianhead background. Well, all the "compassionate" and "understanding" types on campus, the pinhead academic types, said it was "insensitive" and "racists", and got rid of a 100 year tradition. Well guess what, the f'in HURON Indians themselves said they were honored that the school had them as mascots and asked the school to keep them as mascots. Well, the pinhead academic types were SO much smarter and did away with the Hurons. The Huron Indians were very disappointed and now they, the school, are the "Eagles". Nice

Strange that there are no comments or responses so far from any of the alledged offended native Americans.

That's sick to get on your hands and knees and succome to that Politically Correct Bull. I would love to have my Nationality on a flag or adopted as a mascot by a college or university. "Hoo-Raw" for Florida State for keeping the indian on the pony.

What a joke. I agree with pgre, where are the "offended" responses? There was never disrespect intended, only pride. That was a sad day in 1996. I am proud to be part of the last class of redskins!!

They should have changed it to the bird. That way they'd have a hand signal.

They fired the idiot that started all this, yet they continue to keep moving on it.

So you advocate concentration camps?..... Hmmmm sounds kinda facist to me. Oh, if the liberals are "powerless losers", seems to me they won this round. Like they always do eventually.

To the rest of the nut cases here, Miami changed its name at the request of the tribe (and a little bowing to the PC pressure of the time) which it was named after and had (and still has) a close relationship. Saddens me that they want to remove the indiana head mascot, not sure why but from a businsess standpoint it makes sense to establish a brand. If any of the Alum had paid attention, they've been pushing the Upham Hall lantern more anyway.

Still Proud to be a Redskin though.

As a person of Irish descendance, I find the use of "Fighting Irish" to be a particularly upsetting and offensive stereotype that needs to be discontinued immediately. In fact, I demand that all Viking, Trojan, Spartan, Vandal, Irish and other demeaning logos and mascots be discontinued at once. It hurts my feeling deeply every time I am subjected to this insult to my heritage. Lawsuits are forthcoming. I will be contacting jewish lawyers from the ACLU, SPLC, ADL, B'Nai B'rith, and NAAWP to help put an end to this hurtful offense to my ancestors.
Better change the name Miami while you're at it, morons. That's an indian name too. Nothing but animals and nut names should be used from now on.

Is a name change for Indiana (Indiana= Indian lands) in the offing? I am sure our Native American citizens don't like being reminded of their lands being taken from them.

The fact is the indians didn't complain at all. It was the same bunch of jewish lawyers who removed prayer from schools, and references to Christmas, and nativity scenes, and keep trying to remove "under God" from the pledge of allegiance. The same bunch of communists that want to force homosexuality down everybody's throat and into the military.

Yet another irrational idiotic example of political correctness overkill. To many dogooders in higher education. The faculty and administration needs a few days working in a factory or coal mine. Maybe, they could understand real life! GO HAWKS!
