The decendants of Davy Crocket and those whose ancestors died in the Alamo haven't complained about the University of Tennessee's mascot. UT also uses a live dog for their other mascot. PETA has complained about that because September is a hot month in the deep south, and when UT scores a touchdown a cannon is fired, which upsets the dog, so I understand that.

Exactly. If a group that I am not a member of finds something to be offensive, it is not up to me to determine otherwise.
If the Jews find their extermination to be offensive, its not up to anyone to determine the legitimacy of their claim. If girls subjected to female genital mutilation in West Africa find it to be unpleasant--only they can help themselves. Wouldn't want to "butt in." If gays in Uganda don't like receiving the death penalty for being themselves, it is not up to me to determine whether or not that is morally reprehensible. If women in Pakistan are shot in the street for showing their faces, let the resistance movement rise up from among the victims; the domineering patriarchal system of Islam-infused government will surely be conducive to a strong women's rights movement in that nation. One does not have to be in someone's shoes to partially comprehend the issue at hand.

The student was NOT wearing it for "school spirit". He was drunk and belligerent and even got in the face a sherrif deputy. He deserved to be thrown out.

Sure... That's like saying that I'm not really American because my family is from Italy and England. They (the Illini Indians) migrated out of Illinois 30 years before there even was a university... meaning there were no Illini Indians after 1840. Instead, they amalgamated with another tribe. Hence my description of them as “extinct.”
Secondly, they didn't protest until student groups urged them too. You can read the whole history online. As recently as the mid 90's the "descendants," and I use that term loosely based on the previous point, said they approved of the mascot. It wasn't until hyper-sensitive people like you butted in that it became an issue. Guess what? Here is a list of five mascots, I as a white male, have a problem with... please join me in protest. Once you finish with these, I'll send you more.
The Mountaineer (West Virginia)
Sparty (Michigan St.)
Battling Bishop (Ohio Wes.)
The Scarlet Knight (Rutgers)
Crusader (Valparaiso)
What about Buckeyes? All the Nuts world over should raise heck about it until OSU and the State of Ohio give them reparations and appoligize.
