I attended the meeting. The school board was in such dire straights to cut expenses, however they didn't bat an eye at flushing away $14,000 by making us make of 3 days of school. However, they did agree to make up 1 day, filing a waiver for 2. This just wastes 5,000. 5,000 to educate students who's minds will already be on summer break. It left the people in attendance with their jaws dropped. Where is the rational in all this? Why doesn't the media question these decisions?

Why don't you question the decisions yourself. Its not the media's responsibility. Do it in a public meeting. Make yourself known. If you don't find any value in educating kids for the full 180 days then maybe we should cancel the last week of school. Maybe the last month?? I'm sure starting in May the kids' minds will be on summer break so we might as well call it May 1 just in time for their minds to be coming off of Christmas break??
The fact is kids need to be in school and in my opinion more than what they are going now. I wonder why the rest of the world is out pacing us in education. They go longer than we do. Is simple. If we continue to lower expectations and make excuses why shouldn't go to school then we will all be speaking Chinese one day.

The fact that BCSC has to cut expenses and jobs is of no surprise to me. The schools put so much money into things that aren't needed. Why do the sports' teams need new uniforms every year? Why does the school need smartboards when the chalk and dry erase boards are perfectly acceptable? IMO, if the school put half as much money into the educational classes as they do in the extracurriculars and sports then expenses wouldn't have to be cut. At least not as much. Why doesn't the school board pay attention to the fact that more kids' grades are slipping instead of the fact that the football team won last friday's game. I mean honestly...We wonder why there are so many schools that have students who not only have outstanding grades, but are sports stars at the school, but we don't...It's because the other schools care more about grades then sports, and they push the fact that if you want to stay on the team you have to keep up your grades...Benton Central is a disgrace....
