Recent unfortunate occurrences in Maine’s lobster harvesting community that threatens to turn into some kind of serious turf war between Maine lobster harvesters is a problem that cannot be ignored and that a solution must be found to by state and federal government authorities in order to avoid a further escalation of the problem. Some ideas to consider providing a solution to this problem might be to develop a moose-style lottery for lobster harvesting in Maine’s coastal waters to control the number of people harvesting for lobsters. Another idea to consider is a work retraining program for lobsters to work and other industries that could utilize their skills they have learned by harvesting for lobsters. Obviously, a major contributor to this problem is the current recession, which can cause social instability; I believe government has a duty to lessen social instability to attempt a prevention of acts of physical aggressions between citizens. The turf war brewing in Maine’s costal communities is an example of this where government needs to step in and do something.

It is frustration of low lobster prices...that is what is causing it.
