Teacher, former student involved in alleged drug deal
Posted: Thursday, December 29, 2011 10:00 pm |(0)

FLEMINGSBURG | A Bath County teacher and one of his former students from Mason County were charged Wednesday for alleged drug trafficking.
Darrell Coburn, 60, of Laurelwood Court, Flemingsburg, and Brad Barnett, 29, of Hinton Drive, Maysville were observed by narcotic task force agents making what was believed to be a drug transaction around 4:30 p.m., Wednesday in Flemingburg.
According to officials with the Buffalo Trace/Gateway Area Narcotics Task Force, the two men have been under investigation for three months, after agents received tips about alleged drug trafficking involving prescription drugs. A task force agent said during the investigation, it was uncovered that Coburn has been allegedly diverting his legally prescribed medications, methadone and oxycodone to Barnett.
Coburn and Barnett have known each other since Coburn taught at Mason County High School, where Barnett was a student, said the agent.
Coburn is currently employed at Bath County High School and is also an active minister at a Bath County church. Barnett gave his occupation as a full-time student.
According to the agent, Coburn and Barnett were under surveillance at a drug store in downtown Flemingsburg. Agents observed Coburn meet Barnett in front of the store, then the two men conducted what appeared to be a drug transaction in the parking lot. After Coburn and Barnett left the parking lot in their vehicles, agents made a traffic stop on each and said they discovered Barnett in possession of 89 methadone tablets, 89 oxycodone tablets and one Viagra.
According to officials, Coburn had the original prescription bottles in his possession, but only one tablet of each drug was contained in the bottles. The prescription quantities were 100 methadone and 90 oxycodone. Coburn allegedly admitted to task force agents he has been giving the prescriptions to Barnett for more than one year. Agents are investigating the whereabouts of the 10 missing methadone tablets. The street value of the tablets is $1,800, said the agent.
Coburn was cited on one count first-degree trafficking controlled substance, over 10 dose units, a class C felony; he was not arrested due to his cooperation with officials.
Barnett was arrested and charged with one count first-degree trafficking controlled substance, over 10 dose unit. He was incarcerated in the Mason County Detention Center and released Thursday morning on a $1,000 unsecured bond.
The Buffalo Trace/Gateway Area Narcotics Task force was assisted by the Flemingsburg Police Department and Fleming County Sheriff's Office.

It is more than a scandal, it touches more than Bath County schools. For a minister or teacher to participate in the distribution of drugs that are going to wind up in the hands of young people is a crime. How many overdoses happened in the past year because of Mr. Colburn and his former student? How many accidents happended? How many crimes were committed with people robbing/stealing to purchase the drugs.

I disagree with the newspaper reports which stated that Mr. Coburn exchanged prescriptions; he exchanged DRUGS!

Why was Mr. Coburn not arrested? He should be in jail, thinking about all the damage he has done to those who ended up taking the drugs, the victims of the drug addicts, the students who should have been seeing him as a role model, the congregation who attended the church where he pastored and looked for him to provide guidence. The list is endless. What a pathetic individual!

Quit crying over spilled milk, if the kids would havce behaved themselves and showed some respect for other peoples property it wouldn't have been a issue, they have no one to blame but themselves.

The point is that we have our priorities all mixed up. How can you expect kids to show respect when things like this go on? People fussed about the kids "supposedly" doing drugs at the old mill - well? They have a teacher dealing. Which is worse? People here are too freaking scared to take a real stand on real issues so we do superficial things like lay new sidewalks and run the kids off the old mill property. By the way, I drove around that area the other day and was amazed at how just downright nasty some of those buildings look. Looks to me like people don't respect their own property.

How and why do we expect respect from our kids,if the Teachers and Preachers are carrying on the way they are? Fix the Adults around here and the kids will follow! Just remember the role models we have around here. GREED IS THE NAME OF THE GAME IN GOOD OLE BATH CO..........

I cannot believe that a teacher and a preacher would act this way. But regardless of their standing in society, if one man was charged with a crime, both should be charged the same. Both men should have the same charges and the same arrest and bond. I personally think the bond is too low and the seriousness of the crime is being downplayed. These men are supplying our youth with drugs. They are drug dealers and should face the same fate as any other dealer.

How about a certain judge's spouse? How's that for a role model Bath County? But we all just go along like nothing's rotten in our little town.
