No they didn't - that's why they started the food stamp program, social security and other social welfare programs - to prevent people from starving in the streets.

It was created after the Great Depression. I think a large percentage do not need it. People need to learn responsible.

The current Food Stamp program as we now know it went into effect in 1961 - a couple of decades after the end of the Great Depression. A large percentage of current recipients do, in fact, work at least one full time job but because of low wages still qualify. Walmart - one of the largest, most profitable corporations in the world, pays their employees so poorly that, on average, each Walmart store in America costs our nation almost $1,000,000 in food stamps and other low-wage benefits because they refuse to pay their employees a living wage with benefits. So quit harping on the victims of low wages and start talking about the root cause, which is highly profitable employers like Walmart all across America making record profits and not allowing their employees to share fairly in the prosperity that their labor helps create.

Let's say these programs were cut. Do you think that would be a safe move for the United States?

Crime would increase dramatically... There would be more drugs, murders, robbery, and so on.

The current policy is not working. Too many people taking advantage of the system. If we don't eliminate it, we should create a tougher criteria. Young people today keep having kids they can't afford and don't mind letting the government pay for it.

I don't have a gay son, but I'd prefer having my son be gay than to have a child that acts like you.

Wrong as usual. Now it's time to change your name yet again. But, that generic "United States" location remains the same. You really should examine what it is in your life that's making you so miserable. The obsessive name calling and cyberbullying hiding behind topix hasn't helped you feel better at all. Good luck!

The people who need to live responsibly are the Walton's, the Koch's and other multi-billionaires who live like kings and pay the people that enable their wealth like paupers. Why do you keep protecting these people who could and should pay their workers a fair living wage with benefits?? In the words FDR,“No business which depends for existence on paying less than living wages to its workers has any right to continue in this country”.
