Wasn't there a restaurant named Gabe's downtown on Frederica Street in the 1950's? I know thats going back a long way, but maybe there's someone that still remembers.

Gabe's had the best steaks in this area.If you ordered a sixteen ounce T-bone,you got a sixteen ounce T-bone and it was good.Another great place for steaks at that time was the Turf Club.Later on that guy had a place in Central City.Ate there on a lot of Sunday's.It was worth the drive.

I'd just like to know what the plans are for these empty motels in O-boro?? My mans father set the foundation for Gabe's it would be almost a sin for them to even think of demolition... I'm in Paris and not able to keep up on current afairs but would appriciate some insight... I do miss the " little Chicago" I've grown to love

Last I heard about Gabes was a decade ago when some dirtbag bashed in a child's head with a toilet tank lid. What was even worse, the kid held onto life in agony before passing on.

The scumbag should have been taken to the roof & forced to take a flight lesson-Face first sans parachute.

The place has definitely seen better days. The 8-Ball crowd (with the Tyson "consultants") have ruined everything.

What the hell kind of joy do you get from a kid being killed because of a scumbag?

Sorry I dont put on a happy face & act like it never happened.Life goes on.But there are people out there who are truly evil & should be destroyed.I make no excuses for my attitude regarding them.

They,on the other hand, are full of excuses & I cant find one of them worthy of justifying the violent death of a child.

Call me bitter. The day comes when I shrug off evil skilletheads is the day I'll be just as blind as you.

gnash rambler... Well I don't know anything about all of that story. I never spent time in that area of town. Obviously, you must have spent a great deal of time there. You continue to subject us to your memories of how terrible the 18th & Triplett St. district is. Have you consider just staying out of Owensboro all together. Perhaps that would make you feel better. I think it would all of us.

Who asked you how you were doing to begin with?

"Have you consider just staying out of Owensboro all together. Perhaps that would make you feel better. I think it would all of us."

Who is "us"?-The voices in your head dont count.

Its funny you mention that you know nothing regarding the incident, yet you show your blatant ignorance by critiquing my point of view.

Go find a cult leader somewhere & get yourself some "us".

By all means, please catch your breath.
No one wants you to asphyxiate from all the blowing you've been doing.

Anyone have an oxygen tank for "Done Blown Out There?"

Checkout the new picture addition in Owensboro's Picture Gallery. It is a picture of Gabe's Fiorella Statue. Bring back memories anyone?

Re: Gabe's
Gabe's Restaurant, "The Steakhouse of the South", aka "the Flathouse" was right on the corner of 18th and Triplett Sts. The restaurant was lovely with linen, china and crystal at each table. There was a piano bar separarate but in the same building. My mother used to sing there on occasion, for fun, in the 60's.

Gabe's tower holds a special set of wonderful memories for me. My parents had an ugly divorce in 1967. The following year, for my 7th birthday, Mama took me to spend the night at the tower. I swam in the rooftop pool, enjoyed the sun through the retractable roof and looked out over a large part of Owensboro through the spotlessly clean windows and held on tight to the green (oxidized?) iron railing because at 7, I was afraid to be up so high! At one time, one of the Evansville TV stations broadcast a morning show from the "Top of the Tower".

That evening we had dinner in the restaurant. Men were in suits, ladies in dresses and pearls, I was in ruffles, lacy anklets and my "Sunday shoes".

I remember the thickness of the linen tablecloth, the weight of the crystal goblet in which my milk was served, and the silverware service which went from shrimp fork to desert spoon.

The waiters wore creased black slacks, crisp white shirts, and shiny shoes. I felt all grown up and special in spite of my parents' turmoil and I remember the waiter came with a little white, frosted (with flowers) birthday cake bearing its own sparkler.

Our room was clean and bright and, again, the view was unlike any other in town. We had room service for breakfast. The hallways were, of course, circular. It was a safe place and a safe time and I had a wonderful time exploring and I spent some of my birthday money in the nice little gift shop.

It breaks my heart to see the Tower in its current condition and I'm sorry, the mini-market gas station which occupies the former Flathouse corner is an insult to Mr. Fiorella's memory and hard work.

In 1961 I attended a dinner meeting in the new Gabe's Restaurant at 18th & Triplett.
