New Mexico State Representative Cathrynn Brown recently introduced a bill that should it become law rape victims would be charged with a felony and three years in prison if they fail to carry their pregnancies to term. Because it would technically be destroying evidence a woman who was raped in the state of New Mexico would be charged with a crime even if she left the state and got an abortion in another state or in a foreign country. That would apply even to a woman who was not a resident of New Mexico but was raped while passing through the state.

It's raping the victim all over again.

Maybe she should be impregnated by rape and forced to carry it.

This bill is one of those "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" things. After the matter blew up in her face its author said that she actually meant the law to target people who force rape and incest victims to undergo abortions in order to destroy the physical evidence. However, it was written in such a way that some jealous anti-abortion prosecutor could apply it to any woman who got an abortion after being raped.

What makes the whole thing so alarming is that even though the bill's author quickly withdrew it and promised to rewrite it, the pro-life people jumped in to defend it as it was.

I disagree. Until that fetus can maintain life on its own outside the uterus it is pretty much a parasite relying on the mother to give it life. But hey as soon as that ball of cells can survive on its own then u can call it murder.

The world seems to be getting more ignorant by the second. The worst thing that could happen is a child being brought up in a family that never wanted him or her.

That happens quite a bit, weather it was rape or consensual sex.

They never said the mother had to keep the baby and raise it, just carry it to term. There are several people out there that can't have children and would love a chance at parenthood.

Those people should be informed about the millions of kids in orphanages or foster programs.

OMG! If she is raped and doesn't want to carry it, she has the right abort it! Good gracious people. if it is done with in the first 3 months of pregnancy I see no harm in it. A woman choses not to carry the child because the body never fully recovers or goes back to the same. Who want to carry an unwanted fetus of rape! Quit being narrow-minded!

abortion with in the first 3 months in my opinion is not murder. No, I don't believe in using that as a form of birth control. But every fetus is just like an acorn on a tree...that seed may develop into an acorn or it may not, same as a fetus. I can guarantee if I was raped, I would get rid of it as quick as I could with no hesitation. I would be mentally ill over the rape.

Now...you're out just having sexually relations carelessly and you chose to abort, than that is a guilt or not you will have to suffer with for the rest of your life. Abortion with in the first 3 months, isn't murder. Sorry. Has nothing to do with religious beliefs or politics. It is about the woman and how she feels on the inside and is just sure its the best solution. Women's Rights Act all the way!

I totally agree. If it truly is murder than the woman will end up punishing herself for the rest of her life. That is her consequence. If not and she feels that abortion was the best decision more power to her. A child deserves a chance (at the actual state of being able to survive outside of the womb, which is 6 months). A woman has a right to her own body. All of these pro-life people intruding on such an issue makes me sick. ABORTION, ADOPTION they are both good decisions for the woman. One less child living an unhappy life and living off our gov't and a mother selling food stamps for cash.

They're talking about Mexico not America. We have a poor adoption system, they need to work on making it easier to get a kid. Why can someone get a kid quicker at a foreign country but not here? That's strange to me.
