Used to be a scanner or scanner app would allow you to listen in on police and EMS chatter but for the past week the feed has been silent. Any ideas why and if it's permanent?

I would like to know my damn self......Owensboro is getting crazy and I think the citizens in this town deserve to know what's going on instead of having to wait to read the paper

They changed frequency again. I think the expensive digital scanner is all that will pick it up now.

If anyone has details, that'd be great. I think they went to a P25 system, but not sure about Fire, EMS, OMU, etc
Yes I do believe they went to a P 25 system but, understand it was taken offline per request.

Just updated the scanner app on my phone and Owensboro/Daviess County isn't even on the list anymore.

I think we as citizens have every right to be able to listen to scanners so we know what's going on in our neighborhoods. Cops were just all over my street looking for someone, asking to look in backyards. I want my scanner app back on for Owensboro!

I agree also but, if it is illegal to operate some of the broadcasts then it can't be.

I've looked into and the general legal consensus on police scanners is they are legally available public spectrum but scanners cannot be used to commit crimes or be installed in a vehicle. So the apparent signal switch and/or encryption does make one wonder, since all nearby counties seem unaffected.

It's called an equipment upgrade. You know, changing with the times. For some of you, you equate listening to a phone app, and rights as a citizen? Wow, pretty sure that your rights as a person had nothing to do with listening to a scanner. OPD just got a lot of new radios, and it is not to keep people from listening, but it is YOUR equipment that is not compatible . Give it time and Apps will catch up. As for wanting to know what's going on call and ask, or go down and read the public records.

If everyone would mine their own business and worry less about what their neighbors and exes are doing this town would take care if itself. Too many people want to point the finger at OPD for their problems...if they would have kept their damn mouths shut and minded their own business and not stir shit up there would not have been a problem in the first place. If you have time to sit around and listen to a scanner you are really bored....

Until they make the switch to P25 you can go buy an EDACS capable scanner and listen to them until your heart's content. I have no problem picking them up here at the house. When they do go to P25, and as long as they don't encrypt it, you can buy a scanner that will pick that up too (if they will be using phase one which is pretty well the standard for the time being). If your not smart enough to figure out how to program a scanner then what does that say about you?
As far as the scanner app is concerned, that feed was provided by a local volunteer who was nice enough to let you "borrow" their scanner so that you could listen to it.
Just in case you didn't know, it wasn't in real time anyway. None of them are. There is an intentional delay to keep the apps from being misused. For the casual listener, that's all that's needed anyway.
As far as what happened to the feed is anyone's guess. I noticed it went offline, and never came back, right as the severe storms were coming through. Lightning or a power surge could have damaged the scanner itself or maybe even the computer that was being used to relay the audio. If that was the case then they might not have been able to afford to replace what was damaged. They may have even just gotten bored with it or maybe it was taking too much of their bandwidth. Who knows?
Myself, I enjoyed listening to it to keep up with things when I wasn't at home but I'm not crying or complaining just because it isn't there anymore. What did you do before it was there?
