John Baize, former owner of the big E, wanted to bring a casino and convention center here to Owensboro as well as a water park. He was going to fund the project himself and with investors. The city said no and treated him so crappy he left. Now they're wanting that convention center and pretty river front. The biggest difference is, WE are paying through the nose for it in taxes. They cited gambling addiction as to why they didn't want the casino, but as your comment proves (which I'm not saying is a bad thing), if people want to gamble they will. Whether it be the drive to Evansville or to French Lick. Why should the money be kept locally to feed back into our community? Instead, we lost all those potential jobs as well as all the jobs the E provided. The result of that is a stagnated city, government and utilities running amok, and our youth leaving the first chance they get.

@ just sayin thanks for the info. I agree with your input. Its a shame for the city because your right, ppl who gamble are going to regardless. It just makes sense to bring the jobs and keep the money in our community! Oh well, when I feel the urge to play the slot machines I'll be taking my $ across the bridge to IN. SMH..

All the people that make the decision on whether or not one comes here are business owners. What happens when a place comes in here paying great wages and benefits? The board members lose workers and/or they pay better wages which means less $ in their pockets.

They don't consider the bingo hall gambling considering who runs it and who gets the money. I call bs! It's all these Christians wanting it their way when it in all reality could help boom our local economy.

I agree with you on that, I know because its what I do when I have a day off. A local casino would benefit our economy! Owensboro needs to wake up!

I cant prove we don't have a casino because of religious beliefs in our community, but just from asking around, they're the only ones that don't want one. I personally would only go on special days, since I don't go out much, but there are allot of people who do enjoy it on a weekly basis or at least twice a month and that alone could help allot! Hotel stays, local eatery, and shopping will all see more customers just to name a few. Also all the jobs it would create in town would be great!

How ironic that the city was so pleased when our airport flies people to Vegas to spend money there. That's so Owensboro! Lol

People coming to town to stay in hotels and dine at are eateries? Really? Do you see an interstate anywhere in Owensboro, clown? No! The only people who will gamble are locals. There is only so much leisure dollars people have and if they blow it at casino then who suffers? Every ma and pop store in town. Quit trying to sound like warren buffet with your economy talk and use your brain!

Quit trying to sound like warren buffet with your economy talk and use your brain! Do you really need an interstate to build a casino? There are plenty of towns in our area that I'm sure would enjoy one. The city is already fixing up downtown and trying to bring it tourists with the new sports complex and the convention center. I'm not saying build the Caesars freaking palace, just something similar to the one in Evansville. I'm sure you have all the answers right? Sit back and do nothing and change nothing? I'm only stating what I think would work, yet you want to try and bash anything because you disagree. Even if it is mostly locals that use it at times, do you really think it would hurt the town? There are plenty of people from our community that go to Evansville, French lick, and other nearby casinos, that could be keeping all that money in our community. Just because we disagree doesn't mean you have to be an ass.

And they are going to stay the night when it's a twenty minute drive? That really makes sense. People from Evansville and French Lick will come here instead of playing at their own casino? Nope, don't think so. Why not put your efforts into an attraction that will bring people to town.

They are trying to bring in tourists already by fixing up downtown, why would a casino be a terrible idea? I'm sorry, but a newly built park won't do it, and I can see when the convention center is finished people going to the casino that night. Maybe you just don't want it and with your views your afraid to try something new. Like I said you make good points, but your only looking from negative sides of it.

Why not put your efforts into an attraction that will bring people to town. Do you not think that a water park and casino wouldve brought people to town? Do you not think it would have been good with all the families coming in for baseball tournaments for them to have SOMETHING to do? And yes, people from surrounding counties would use it. It's a closer drive than Evansville or French Lick either one. People spending money at the casino wouldn't kill mom and pop stores either. Walmart and the city government have done a fine job at that without a casino. Tell me why a third Walmart is a good idea but a casino isn't? And actually, when people like going casino gambling they will travel to all sorts of different casinos just to play at different tables or machines. I'm not saying a casino will fix all the problems. But Owensboro is dying. Something needs to be done before the economy collapses here and we don't have shit left.

I'm not saying a casino will fix all the problems. But Owensboro is dying. Something needs to be done before the economy collapses here and we don't have shit left. The idea behind downtown is to promote business there. Businesses that encourage spending and circulate money. That is a thriving community! A casino that steals from the blue collar (avg household salary in Owensboro is $35-40) is a monopoly. We need attractions not just one casino. Water park, aquarium, science museum, sports bars, live entertainment, etc. An entertainment district. Now we would be a destination.
