The term African American distinguishes those people alive today who descend from the Africans brought here as slaves, from those blacks who are descendants of immigrants from Africa. Under this guideline, Pres Obama is not technically African American, because his father was not a descendant of slaves, but was instead an immigrant from Kenya.

As for European Americans, there was most definitely a time when immigrants from the northern countries were considered superior to the immigrants from the southern countries in Europe. And the English were considered superior to the Irish. Over time, the differences (whether real or imagined) seemed to blur, and calling attention to what part of Europe your ancestors came from was more just a novelty to talk about than an indication of your personal worth.

We've seen a similar blurring among Hispanics. In the 70s a lot of attention was paid to whether you were Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, central or South American, etc. Now Latino seems to cover the entire ethnicity, with the difference being perceived as very subtle.

Here's what is so funny: for years now, white people have moaned and complained about all the special treatment and favoritism minority groups received. But now that they are on their way to becoming a minority, they are scared to death! But why? If being a minority all this time has truly afforded one with special opportunities and treatment, why aren't you looking forward to your new share in things?

Your fear reveals that you've known all along how unfairly the deck has been stacked, but as long as you were on top, you were happy to see it stay that way. Now you're worried you are going to be treated as you have treated others.

Blacks have proven, as a whole, when you truly look at the big picture, that they cannot function in a free society. There are some great hard working blacks, but the majority of black people, in america or in other countries, act as savage people. Running through the hospitals, grocery stores, streets,Restaurants, everywhere yelling, and trying to just create disturbances. And I Know for a fact that the hard working blacks are ashamed by this. Upset at what their kids and grand kids and great grand kids have become. Sagging their pants and seeing how many women they can get pregnant, how many families can YOU make and not attempt to take care of, "dog". If you cannot see this as truth, you are ignorant of the truth, living in a fairy tale land.

We need special statuses, we need to differentiate, we need Al Sharpton to tell us who we are, we need Jesse ackson to make sure we are recognized, we need a government program...

"African American" is a rude way of saying "black person" which is a much more common sense term. "African American" has derogatory overtones. It's a snide way of saying black people should be sensitive about their race, implying it's an inferior race. And a good way to express that sensitivity, thereby affirming that implication of inferiority, is to use a euphemism such as "African American" instead of the more common sense "black person" terminology.
