Get a shotgun for an earthquake?

I'm worried that if I get a shotgun, and we have a big earthquake, like the New Madrid earthquake of 1811, I might have trouble holding the shotgun, and it might discharge accidentally. I can see myself stumbling around in the earthquake, trying to keep my balance while the earth shakes, and shooting everyone in sight.
But one advantage of a shotgun over a rifle is that the person has to come close enough that you can tell whether it's a friend or foe, before you shoot. With a rifle, you might see someone doing something sinister, and hurry to shoot before it's too late. But then it might turn out that you mistook what was going on, because of how far away the person was. It might have been a friend of yours. "Have been" not "still is" because shooting someone is the surest way to lose a friend. They might never even speak to you again.

I think Joe was trying to be helpful. He makes a lot of sense.
