We kind of do by making them clean the highways. Thats free labor. If the prisoners didnt do it then we'd have to pay someone else to do it.

You realize that the majority of jails and prisons are PRIVATELY owned?

Yeah, think on that for a few minutes and consider why there are so many issues with correctional facilities.

Even if they are privately owned, our tax dollars are paying for bad behavior. I agree that once they get out of jail start making them pay back the money.

It cost about $25,000 a year for someone in a state prison.

Or a smarter solution would be to come up with an alternative that works. Jails and prisons obviously do not work.

The best solution to the problem would be to reduce the cost. Why should it cost so much to keep someone in jail? Put them all in one big room and keep them each in chains, which attach to metal links embedded in a concrete floor. Then, in the daytime, attach their chains for a chain gang, to let them earn their space on the concrete floor.

I think all prisons should operate the same way tent city does in Arizona. Look it up. Their theory....prisoners are there ti learn a lesson, not to sit back and get fat at tax payers expense.

Are their methods any more effective though? Cheaper jails are not the solution either. An alternative needs to be found, incarceration has not and will not ever work.
