Are you so much in the dark that you think this is a labor-management issue?? The problem is electric rates - labor costs or labor unrest is not even a small part of the problem.
. Im not in the dark at all. I realize that century is whining that it's electric rates causing them problems however, 3 yrs ago when they signed a several year long contract they agreed to that rate. Aluminum prices fluctuate drastically. All of a sudden the rates r too high. Century has never lost money & they're not losing it now. Union wages have nothing to do with this. Management was mentioned because they WILL NOT compromise with Big Rivers. They expect Big Rivers to give them exactly what they want no questions asked & put the money lost to b made up by households & other companies. So with that being said YES I believe that managements inability to compromise is a BIG part of the problem.

BTW RWTaylor56, I never said that union wages had anything to do with this, it's all about electric rates. I simply stated that management is also part of the problem because of their inability to compromise. Mayb I'm not following u?!?!?

I apologize - I guess other anti-union comments I'd read bled over into my thinking and writing.:)

I'm not anti-union that's for sure. I belong to a Union. Unions get blamed for everything regardless but it's funny cuz a nonunion plant I used to work for tried to go union.

Everything is he said/she said. From the meeting this morning I was told that alcan and big rivers have met and they and alcans lawyers to big rivers that there is no intention of selling to century. I believe they did make an offer but it was declined. Century has again approached big rivers to help them buy power on the open market. That is what we were told this morning but I will believe it when it happens. I too am an employee of big rivers and I too am going to pay more for my power. I hate that I have to worry about my job because century won't just buy power from big rivers, according to my company, they will not pay less for power from anyone else.

I am still betting Century is wanting to shut the doors for good and trying to make Big Rivers look like the bad one. Bottom line century wants out.

Century buys Alcan both sites pull power contract in August go to open market. DB Wilson shuts down for a year and Coleman gets scrubbers or a baking soda injection system to curb emissions century/alcan buy Coleman station. Big rivers reopens DB Wilson. A thought?

Southwire don't need century. Where building a super melter to melt cold metal so we can cut ties with century. You don't know what your talking about. Century needs Southwire cause there gonna loose a lot of business if we cut ties. Where one of there biggest customers
Lol Century doesn't NEED Southwire nor are your their biggest customers. Get facts straight and what Southwire is building they will still need Century. Further more if Century shut down Southwire couldn't afford the electricity payment that would fall on to them.

Century Aluminum is re opening Ravenswood and buying Alcan. What goes on at the Hawesville smelter has nothing to do with that.. Quit whining over something you know nothing about. If century closes GOD help everyone because your electric bill will triple and mom&pops stores would shut down. Century has made a decent living for most but for the one who says pay cuts. Evidentially you have never worked on a pot line..

Nobody knows what's going to happen. Everyone is speculating but nobody has any real info. We should all stop guessing. Cuz nobody ever said anything about alcan terminating and then out of nowhere boom there it is.

Southwire won't need century with the new super smelter, but we still want them. Get your facts straight

Amen. If people want to work their entire lifetime and never have a dime, then let's get rid of unions.

They aren't all the way up to upcoming MATS if it goes all the way through. I called most of it. And there is more to come but didn't know about Ravenna though. Can't wait that's awesome.

Yes I believe that to b true. People were barely able to pay those bills to begin with & now they're going up.$24 a month could make the difference in food on the table or gas in a car to get to work. They need to quit whining & compromise. If they shut down it's going to get real bad for a lot of people. Enough is enough!!
BIG RIVERS is the reason everyone's bills is going up. IF Century stays open it will increase. If Century closes it will increase. If Century never said anything it was going to increase. They had already planned to meet with the PSC to increase the resdiential rates to pay for the changes the EPA was making them do.

You are 100% correct. Big Rivers is going to hike the price up with or with out the smelters. That's a fact!
